Cold weather health alert extended for Leicestershire as temperatures set to plunge

A cold weather health alert for Leicestershire has been extended as temperatures are set to plummet overnight. The amber warning, which affects all regions of England, came into effect at 12pm today (Thursday, January 9).

Weather conditions are expected to have “significant impacts” across health and social care services, the UK Health and Security Agency (UKHSA) has warned. It said these impacts could include a rise in deaths, particularly among those aged 65 or over with health conditions, and a likely increase in demand for health services.

The alert has been extended as overnight temperatures in Leicester are set to drop well below freezing. Temperatures are expected to drop to -5C tomorrow morning (Friday, January 10).

However, the Met Office is predicting that temperatures will feel even colder than that at -6C. Temperatures are again expected to be below freezing during Saturday (January 11) morning at around -2C, before temperatures pick up slightly on Sunday (January 12).

The cold weather health alert is due to end is at 9am on Tuesday, January 14.
