'Combustible' cladding needs to be removed from prominent building in Coventry city centre. According to a planning application, the presence of combustible materials has been identified within the external façade of Abbey Court at Priory Place.

The top of building, where apartments are based, has timber cladding, timber decking and supports to balconies and terraces. "These materials need to be replaced to safeguard the building from the spread of fire across the external wall materials and through any associated cavities/voids," the report states.

As well as replacing the cladding, the project also includes the installation of appropriate cavity closers in all areas that cavity closers are required to isolate each individual apartment in the event of a fire.

The application says the replacement materials will match the aesthetics of the existing materials. "The presence of combustible materials has been identified within the external façade of Abbey Court, and therefore it is proposed to replace these with non-combustible alternatives," the report details.

"The works will include installation of horizontal and vertical cavity barriers at the appropriate junctions and the closing of cavities at openings within the façade at the areas being remediated.

"There will also be remediation works to the inset, hung and cantilevered balconies' decking and supports which are timber and is combustible."

But before the works can be carried out, they have to be approved by the city council. Details about the application can be found on the council's website, searching in the planning section for reference PL/2024/0002324/FUL.
