Commonwealth Games 2022: Shock in the pool as Adam Peaty out of the medals in 100m breaststroke

Commonwealth Games 2022 live: cycling, gymnastics and beach volleyball updates from day three
Commonwealth Games 2022 live: cycling, gymnastics and beach volleyball updates from day three
  • Track cycling abandoned after riders and fans caught in huge crash

  • England's Jake Jarman takes gold in the men's all-round gymnastics final while James Hall takes silver

  • England's Ondine Achampong wins silver in women's all-around

  • Alice Tai wins gold in the pool just six months after having her leg amputated

  • Shock as Peaty finishes out of the medals in the 100m breaststroke as James Wilby wins gold

Adam Peaty does not lose. He had not done so in a 100 metres breaststroke race at a major championship since 2014. So to describe Sunday night’s defeat as a shock result does not even come close.

Peaty did not just lose, he was hammered. That he did not even win a medal suggests he is correct in his post-race assertion that “something has obviously gone majorly wrong”.

Given his injury problems, it will not take much to assess what exactly that is. But credit must first go to James Wilby, who not only inflicted the biggest surprise result this Sandwell Aquatics Centre pool will see during these Commonwealth Games, but ensured the gold medal still went the hosts’ way, even if the winner was not the Englishman anyone expected. He capitalised perfectly on his team-mate’s underperformance.

For Peaty, the answer to defeat surely lies in a freak accident while on a training camp in Tenerife in May when he broke a bone in his right foot. Not only was it the first serious injury of his career, but it came off the back of a total break from swimming during which he did not set foot in a pool for three months after last year’s Olympics.

Prior to these Commonwealth Games he had not raced since April, and only once this year before that. He had spent most of the past few months swimming using only his arms. That he was even able to do so was only because he had confounded doctors’ expectation that it would take 12 weeks to recover.

There was simply no feasible way for the triple Olympic champion and world record holder to be in peak physical shape here. And yet all the signs still suggested he would triumph.

In the heats he was the only man to break one minute; in the semi-finals he finished almost a second ahead of anyone else; and halfway through the final he was clear in front.

Then, like never before in his senior career, the wheels fell off and he went backwards. Wilby’s 59.25-second victory would ordinarily be a breeze for Peaty. So, too, the times by Australia’s silver and bronze medalists Zac Stubblety-Cook and Sam Williamson.

“I just don’t know what went wrong,” said Peaty, 27. “With 25m to go I had nothing in the tank. Sometimes you just have a bad race. I can’t even remember when I went that slow.

“Of course it’s a shock. Of course it’s disappointing. It took a broken foot to get [the unbeaten streak] away from me. But I chose to fight. I don’t really care about the stats and how long I’m undefeated. Going into the next two years it’s all about how I peak in Paris [2024 Olympics].

The perennial bridesmaid, Wilby, 28, has spent almost his whole career finishing behind Peaty.

“I’ve always chased him,” he said. “He’s a phenomenal athlete. Credit where it’s due, he’s the fastest breaststroker in the world. You can't take that away from him.

“This moment, I was able to get a little edge on him, but he’ll probably kick me in the arse later in the calendar. I’m overwhelmed and amazed by the result.”

There was further English joy with Alice Tai claiming 100m backstroke S8 gold just six months after having her right leg amputated to relieve her of the pain inflicted by a club foot.

Wales’ Lily Rice claimed bronze behind Tai, while her Welsh team-mate Medi Harris did likewise in the 100m backstroke. England also earned two bronzes courtesy of James Guy in the 200m butterfly and the women’s 4x200m freestyle team.

Commonwealth Games, day three - as it happened

10:10 PM

That's it for today

But please join us for all the action from the Games tomorrow.

09:41 PM

South Africa win the men's sevens gold

They've beaten Fiji 31-7 - from the start of the tournament they've been the most impressive side and they dominated this final. Fiji are still without a Commonwealth gold in their national sport.

09:31 PM

World record for Australia!

It's come in the final of the women's 4x200m freestyle relay. The new world best is 7mins 39.29secs - it was a stunning swim from the awesome foursome who were pushed out to bronze by China and the USA in Tokyo last year.

Canada (7:51.98) win the silver and England (7:57.11) the bronze.

09:22 PM

Gold for Australia in the women's sevens

The Aussies have just seen off the challenge of Fiji. They won 22-12 as from the start the Green and Gold took control.

The men's final is just starting - Fiji are taking on South Africa.

Peaty congratulates Wilby

Who thought they'd be seeing this today? A defeated Adam Peaty congratulating his victor...

09:09 PM

As shocks go, that is pretty HUGE

Peaty was unbeaten in the 100m since 2014 and had only been beaten in the 50m once over the same period.

Clearly the lack of proper training and preparation, caused by the broken foot, took it's toll. That was only his fifth race of the year - a figure he usually hits in January - BUT well swum Wilby. As he said, he took his opportunity and huge credit to Peaty who went and hugged his team-mate as soon as the race was over.

09:06 PM

In the shock of not only seeing Peaty not win gold...

...but also not win a medal I neglected to tell you who won silver and bronze - apols...

Australia's Zac Stubblety-Cook took the silver medal and compatriot Sam Williamson grabbed bronze as Peaty came home in fourth.

09:05 PM

James Wilby speaks...

In the shock to seeing Adam Peaty beaten it's easy to forget that Wilby is a fine swimmer and deserved gold-medal winner.

Here's what he had to say...

"I love racing and racing alongside [Peaty] is always fun. At the end of the day we're both incredible racers and we'll be back. It's about taking your opportunities...I am thrilled and there's more to come."

09:04 PM

Adam Peaty speaks...

On his initial thoughts...

"Yeah, when it comes down to the race sometimes it doesn't go to plan. I was hurting from the 50m but you know that’s a lack of training, lack of racing… it is what it is. I can't overthink it...Wilby had a great race. I was a lot slower than yesterday, it was just a bad race."

On deciding to race just 10 weeks after breaking his foot...

"I talked to my trainer and we talking about [possibility of missing these Games]. But I am a fighter and I am always fighting. This is probably my last Commonwealth Games."

On the plan now...

"The next two years are going to be huge [with the Paris Olympics in 2024]. How we attack that now, I don’t know. Because I haven’t done two winter blocks in a long time so it’s back to the drawing board and back to training."

08:58 PM

James Wilby wins AND Adam Peaty misses out on a medal!

That's a huge shock...

Peaty slowed down in the last 20 metres and Wilby brought him and overtook him.

08:56 PM

Peaty is unbeaten since 2014 in this race

And he's away fast in the centre.

08:55 PM

Huge roar for Peaty

He's still got his moustache on - he hasn't shaved it as some suspected he might.

08:54 PM

It's nearly Adam Peaty time!

He's the strong favourite - for obvious reasons, he is the GOAT in breaststroke after all.

Also going for the home nations are James Wilby for England and Ross Murdock and Craig Benson for Scotland.

08:52 PM

Bronze for Wales in the women's 100m backstroke!

That's thanks to Medi Harris. Gold was won by the Olympic champion Kaylee McKeown with Canada's Kylie Masse taking the silver.

08:51 PM

New Zealand win the bronze in the men's sevens

They've just beaten Australia 26-12. That means it's a double bronze for the Kiwis as their women's team beat Canada 19-12.

08:34 PM

It's half-time in the men's sevens bronze-medal match

New Zealand hold the early advantage as they lead over old foes Australia 14-7.

08:28 PM

England make it two wins from two in the women's hockey

They held on to their 1-0 lead against Canada. Anna Toman's second quarter-goal was enough for the win.

08:25 PM

No rest for Duncan Scott

He was in the second 100m freestyle semi-final - he finishes in third and makes it through to tomorrow's final.

Canada's Ruslan Gaziev won  second semi final with compatriot Joshua Edwards second. And the good news is that Tom Dean, Scott and Jacob Whittle are all through to the final.

08:19 PM

The first men's 100m freestyle semi has been won by...

...Kyle Chalmers. The Australian swam 47.36 a new Games record!

England's Tom Dean was second in 47.83, Australia's William Xu Yang was third and Jacod Whittle of Englnad was fourth.

08:16 PM

It's been a horror show for England's sevens sides

The women's side finished in fifth and the men's team finished in ninth after their 31-17 win over Uganda. Many lessons have to be learned with both men's and women's teams failing to even challenge for a medal.

08:13 PM

It's a brilliant swim from McKeon

And a one, two, three for the Aussies!

McKeon won in 23.99, the second fastest in the world this year. Jack was second with Harris third.

08:12 PM

Back in the pool

It's the women's 50m freestyle.

Going for England is Anna Hopkin.

Australia's Emma McKeon, Meg Harris and Shyna Jack are favourites for the one, two, three. Can Hopkin get in amongst the medals?

08:08 PM

They're into the last quarter in the women's hockey

And the hosts still have a slender 1-0 lead over the Canadians.

08:00 PM

In the women's hockey

England are facing Canada in their second group game, they're currently 1-0 up with five minutes of the third quarter left. They thrashed Ghana 12-0 in their opener on Saturday and this clash was always going to be tougher - but it's currently a case of so far, so good.

07:56 PM

Thanks to that silver in the 200m butterfly

Chad le Clos  is now the joint most successful Commonwealth athlete ever. His 18 medals puts him alongside alongside shooters Phillip Adams, of Australia, and England's Mick Gault.

07:45 PM

Some reading on the inspiring Alice Tai

Take a minute or two to read these - you won't regret it.

07:43 PM

Alice Tai speaks...

And what a story she has, she missed out on Tokyo due to operations on her arms and earier this year had a leg removed...

"Cannot even believe I'm here, I had the amputation in January and had to learn how to walk again...I have so much to learn [due to the amputation] everything is changing...I am in a shock!"

07:39 PM

Gold for Alice Tai!

It's come in the women's S8 100m backstroke. Tai dominated that and there was never any really doubt she was going to win that even if she was five seconds down on her world record time BUT who cares!

New Zealand’s Tupou Neiufi takes silver and Wales’ Lily Rice bronze.

07:30 PM

Clareburt wins for New Zealand

He just pipped Le Clos for gold in the last 15m.

James Guy wins the bronze for England! Scotland's Duncan Scott was back in fifth. England pair Mason Wilby and Jay Lelliott are sixth and seventh.

07:29 PM

At halfway Le Clos leads from Guy

This is a brutal race - can they hold on?

07:28 PM

As expected

Chad le Clos - the man who took down Michael Phellps in 2012 - is off quickly, as is James Guy.

07:28 PM

The men's 200m butterfly is about to get under way

And it's a really open race - James Guy for England, Duncan Scott goes for Scotland (aiming for a 10th Commenwealth medal) Clareburt of New Zealand is one to watch, as is South Africa's Chad le Clos who's going for this title for a fourth time in a row...

It should be exciting.

07:14 PM

So the attention moves to the pool now

And there are eight golds up for grabs...

Highlights include...

  • Adam Peaty going for gold in the 100m breaststroke (8.51)

  • Chad le Clos going for a record-equalling Games medal in the 200m butterfly (7.38)

  • The South African star will face a challenge from Scotland's Duncan Scott who is also going for a record-equalling 10th Commonwealth medal.

More drama at the velodrome

After what seems like an eternity Jack Carlin has been awarded the bronze in the men's sprint.

Australia's Matt Glaetzer beat him in the ride-off for the last podium place, but after watching many a rerun of that last run officials have concluded that the Scot was impeded by the Aussie as he moved down the bank. It seem a bit harsh, as Glaetzer was by far the quicker of the pair but rules are rules.

07:04 PM

Silver for Scotland!

That's thanks to John Archibald's effort in the men's scratch 15km at the velodrome. Before you ask, yes, he is related to Katie Archibald.

New Zealand's Corbin Strong  took the gold and Wales' Will Roberts took a well-earned bronze.

06:57 PM

Good news about Matt Wells

After that horror crash this morning in the velodrome, British cycling have just tweeted this...

Update: Following medical treatment in hospital, Matt Walls has been discharged with stitches in his forehead, but thankfully no major injuries. Our best wishes go to all riders and spectators involved in the crash and thanks go to the medical teams for their expert care.

Considering the severity of the crash it seems amazing that the cyclist only had to have a few stitches in his head.

06:54 PM

Its been a bad Games for England's sevens teams

They both limped out of medal contention on Saturday morning. Such is the nature of sevens competition that you place for all the places regardless of whether a medal is up for grabs or not.

England women have just beaten Scotland 29-5 to secure fifth spot. The men's side are currently facing Uganda to find out whether they'll end up in ninth or 10th.

06:44 PM

The result in that Glaetzer-Carlin battle for bronze

Is still not confirmed. After the race several officials were crowded around a TV monitor - it wasn't clear exactly what they were checking on but as it stands Glaetzer isn't yet the official bronze medal winner in the men's sprint.

There wasn't any protest from Carlin as far as I can tell...

06:33 PM

Matt Glaetzer beats Jack Carlin for the bronze

In the men's sprint at the velodrome.

It was a great comeback win for the Australian and it proved to be a race too far for the Scot.

06:07 PM

Glaetzer takes the second race

It looked good for Jack Carlin, he came off the last few bends at pace but the Australian just about held on (by about half a wheel) and this men's sprint will go to a third-race decider.

Remember it was Glaetzer who was involved in that horror crash with Joe Truman yesterday, so he's done so well to not only get back on the bike but be hugely competitive so soon afterwards.

In the gold-medal race Australia's Matthew Richardson has taken the title in straight rides - no need for a third race as he sees off the big test of Trinidad and Tobago's Nicholas Paul. Paul was the favourite for that one...

06:04 PM

Jack Carlin is now in his second of three races

Against Matt Glaetzer in the men's sprint. A win here will secure the Scot the bronze...

06:03 PM

Earlier Wales won their first gold of the Games

Thanks to the efforts of  Para-cyclist James Ball. He along with pilot Matt Rotherham won the tandem B sprint. In the fianl they beat Scotland Neil Fachie and Lewis Stewart.

This is what Ball told the BBC before collecting the gold medal.

"It’s incredible, I’ve waited a long time for this. Especially in the sprint as well, because everyone knows me and Neil [Fachie] have been going 1-2, so it’s nice to prove to myself if anything, that me and Matt could do it. We were happy with just two silvers - the same as last result so not got any better, not got any worse - but to come away with a gold on top of that, I’m so happy."

Sophie Capewell on her bronze medal in the 500m time trial

"Everyone came and gave me a big hug - it's been a while since I've done a 500 in competition so this meant a lot. I had some good form [coming into this] but just lacking a bit of repeatability...I am really proud of what I've just done."

05:47 PM

Good news from Joe Truman after yesterday's crash

05:46 PM

Jack Carlin has the early advantage in the men's sprint

He overtook Australia's Matt Glaetzer on the last corner at the velodrome in the battle for the bronze.

It's a best-of-three clash and the Scot is one up with two races to go.

05:42 PM

Kristina Clonan wins the women's 500m time trial

With the last run of the final!

That's pushed Sophie Capewell of England into bronze and Canada's Kelsey Mitchall to second. Mitchell set a news Games record early on, but Clonan beats that with a time of 33.234 seconds - that's 0.06 inside the previous leader's mark.

05:38 PM

On the track down in London

The women's 500m time-trial is coming to a close. It's close, it's tense as England's Sophie Capewell is in silver-medal position with three riders to go.

05:28 PM

It's been a tense afternoon in the men's bowls

England have just made it through to the semi-finals following their 17-11 win over Jersey.  Louis Ridout, Nick Brett and James Chestney will face the winner of Wales vs Scotland.

05:16 PM

Awesome Ondine

Ondine Achampong has won the silver in the women's all-around. She was brilliant and but for the fall on the beam - the apparatus that always makes or breaks an all-around - would be wearing gold. But at 18 she has huge potential and you feel there's more to come.

Ondine Achampong - REUTERS
Ondine Achampong - REUTERS

05:13 PM

Georgia Godwin wins the all-around

The Australian deserved to take home the gold. But Achampong pushed her all the way and but for that fall on the beam would have won. Canada's Emma Spence wins the bronze with Alice Kinsella in fourth.

05:09 PM

Ondine Achampong has just completed her floor routine

The English star needs a 12.7 needed for a silver - she gave it everything and it was a technical, tricky routine...

It's a 13.35! It's a silver as it stands - that's a fine score. Remember she had a fall on the beam and it looks as though she'll end up just 0.55 off gold, which will likely go to Australia's Georgia Godwin.

04:56 PM

Alex Yee's second gold brings with it pooch problems

By Ben Bloom

Alex Yee will depart Birmingham with two hard-earned gold medals, but to his girlfriend, fellow triathlete Olivia Mathias, these Commonwealth Games may well be remembered for his broken promises.

Individual champion Yee helped England’s mixed team romp to relay victory on Sunday, with Mathias part of the Welsh quartet that claimed an unexpected silver medal.

That shared podium, according to Mathias, should ensure a new arrival at the Midlands home they share. But Yee was less convinced.

“I’m pretty sure we had a deal that if Wales got a medal we could get a Labrador dog, but he’s backtracking,” said Mathias.

Yee swiftly countered: “No, that’s wrong. It’s not right. I didn’t shake on that. I haven’t backtracked.”

The dispute will doubtless continue, but less debatable is Yee’s status as the sport’s rising star. A silver medalist at last year’s Olympics, Yee has seized the mantle of Britain’s triathlon king from the absent Brownlee brothers in spectacular style.

England team-mates Alex Yee, Sophie Coldwell Georgia Taylor-Brown and Samuel Dickinson celebrate winning the gold - SHUTTERSTOCK
England team-mates Alex Yee, Sophie Coldwell Georgia Taylor-Brown and Samuel Dickinson celebrate winning the gold - SHUTTERSTOCK

His leg at the start of Sunday’s mixed relay - which featured four rapid legs of a 300-metre swim, five-kilometre cycle and two-kilometre run - was 20 seconds quicker than anyone else in the race, giving England what would prove an unassailable early lead.

That margin swung only by a few seconds under Sophie Coldwell and Sam Dickinson, before individual silver medalist Georgia Taylor-Brown brought the team home to victory by 46 seconds.

England’s winning time was one hour, 16 minutes and 40 seconds. Wales edged a thrilling battle for silver, three seconds ahead of Australia, who took bronze.

“It’s never straightforward in these things,” said Yee. “So many things could go wrong, so many likely mistakes, which could cost some penalties.

“There is so much to happen in an hour of racing. We wanted to keep it as clean as possible, stay positive through the whole race and I wanted to give the guys as much of a lead as I could.”

Asked what he would do with his medal, Yee said: “Now me and Liv can put ours next to each other. We have just moved house so hopefully there will be a nice place for them somewhere.”

Less space for the dog though, it seems.

04:45 PM

In the women's all around final

Australia's Georgia Godwin leads from England's Ondine Achampong in second, Canada's Emma Spence is in third with another home hope Alice Kinsella fourth. There's just one apparatus to go it's do-or-die time.

04:37 PM

Silver for Scotland in the points race

Neah Evans goes one better than she did four years ago on the Gold Coast. And it's a bronze for Wales as Eluned King finishes in third.

Georgia Baker controlled the race from the start and deservedly wins the gold.

04:32 PM

Georgia Baker looks in control now

The Australian is riding a fine points race here. Scotland's Neah Baker is currently in the silver medal position with 30 points - 15 behind Baker's 45.

04:25 PM

Australia's Georgia Baker leads on 35 points

But Neah Evans of Scotland is third on 27 points. Laura Kenny has five points, back in 12th.

04:21 PM

England's Josie Knight is currently in second with 50 laps to go

Kenny is way back stuck on one point.

04:15 PM

With 64 laps to go

Laura Kenny has one point - but it's early days.

04:13 PM

So this isn't a case of first across the line wins

Nope, it's a bit more complicated than that...

Over the 100 laps there are 10 sprints for which riders can win points, the one with the most points at the end of the race wins.

04:11 PM

Laura Kenny is now up in the points race

It's just 100 laps of the track and it's the gold she won back in 2014...Can she do it again?

04:03 PM

'Something must be done'

Sir Chris Hoy has just been speaking on the BBC about the horror crash ...

“There are quite often crashes but they are rarely very serious. This one is the direct result of not having a barrier at the top of the fencing. Personally, I think it is preventable if they put a perspex screen to protect the crowd. I have seen a shot of it and it was horrendous to see. Something has to be done before something genuinely serious happens."

03:51 PM

England win team mixed relay gold!

Another medal for England in the triathlon! Georgia Taylor-Brown crosses the line in first position and is mobbed by her teammates. That's a third triathlon gold today!

Non Stanford of Wales comes home to take the silver after a brilliant run. This is the last race of Non Stanford's triathlon career and what a fitting race to finish with. The crowd acknowledge cheer in appreciation as she reaches the blue carpet.

03:45 PM

Lead stretches to a minute in the triathlon

Georgia Taylor-Brown has taken over for England's anchor leg of the team mixed relay. She's onto the run and between them the two have extended their lead over the chasing pack to a minute.

The chase group has started to stretch out. New Zealand are starting to be dropped but Non Stanford for Wales and Sophie Lin of Australia are battling it out for the silver medal. England look set to claim a fourth triathlon gold of the games (third of the day!)

England win! 4-2

That was the game. A brilliant match between the home nation's side. England kept England honest throughout and that was tough for the players on both sides. Top-tier clash that.

03:33 PM

England score another!

Surely that's the game? Nicholas Bandurak again hammers the ball home. There's only one minute to go, that must be the final chapter in what has been a mad game. Wales have given it their absolute all.

03:31 PM

Two more goals in the hockey

Scratch what I just said about the hockey. Wales have equalised from a penalty corner, Lewis Prosser's attempt at a second goal is saved before James Carson smashes the ball home.

But England score again! Absolute madness as Phillip Roper loops the ball over the keeper. This is a ridiculous match.

Going into the final quarter, England have pulled ahead of Wales. They mounted a barrage of attacks at the end of that quarter and Nicholas Bandurak found the back of the goal. This would be a well fought victory in Pool B for England

Kinsella takes the lead

Great routine. She was very clean there and she looks relieved as she walks back over to her coach. The judges take their time but 13.700 is the score and she moves into top place. She has a 0.300 penalty but it's still enough to put her 0.400 clear in the lead.

Achampong on the uneven bars

Ondine Achampong has just been through her routine on the uneven bars. She looks good, moving between the bars seemingly with ease and it also looks a difficult routine. She will have some deductions, her dismount wasn't completely clean.

She scores 13.250, decent. It's enough to keep her in first place for now. Alice Kinsella is up to the bars.

03:11 PM

Cycling resumes in the velodrome

After this morning's horrific crash which involved nine athletes and has left English rider Matt Walls in hospital, the velodrome is back open for the cycling.

There was only one heat left from this morning's session which was abandoned whilst treatment was given to those injured. Matt Richardson has just beaten Shah Strom in the men's sprint quarter finals. He will face Scotland's Jack Carlin later

England's Sophie Coldwell has extended the lead she was handed by Alex Yee in the previous leg of the race. She now leads a chasing pack on the bike which consists of Wales, Scotland, Australia and New Zealand.

We're coming up to the half-way point in the race with two legs to go after the current riders complete their run.

Gymnast takes a tumble

Ruthuja Nataraj has just had a bit of a nightmare, falling off the uneven bars, she wasn't able to cling on after trying to hop between the bars. The Indian gymnast faceplants onto the ground but get's back up to complete the routine.

03:03 PM

Shannon Archer for Scotland has just gone third after her vault to put the home nations in all three top positions. She has a score of 13.700 with Australia's Georgia Owen behind her on 13.300.

A familiar scoreboard so far in the gymnastics as Odine Achampong leads the way from compatriot Alice Kinsella. They're currently finishing off the first rotation with both English gymnasts having scored highly on the vault.

Alice Kinsella competed at the Gold Coast Games winning three medals, including in this event. Achampong is competing in her first Commonwealth Games at only 18 years of age.

None of the Wales gymnasts in this event are over 16. Start them young.

Alice Kinsella is up to the vault for England. She springs off the board and takes a small jump on the landing after twisting through the air. A solid effort for the first of her four apparatus.

She takes a score of 13.850 and slots into second place in the very early stages of this competition. She was the highest qualifier so definitely one to watch.

02:41 PM

Mixed team relay triathlon

In the last triathlon event of the day the athletes are in the bike discipline. A break away group has formed with Scotland leading the way, followed by South Africa and England. We're still only around half-way through the race so still plenty that could happen but we'll see if England can claim a third triathlon gold of the day as that race progresses.

02:35 PM

Women's gymnastics about to get going

The women's all-round gymnastics final will be starting in the next few minutes. The athletes are just being introduced to lots of cheering from the crowd at the NEC. If it can give us half the excitement the men's event did earlier we'll be in for a great contest.

Matt Baker has just said on commentary "To be honest with you, it could go anywhere." Should be fun!

02:30 PM

Wales equalise in the hockey

Lewis Prosser has drawn Wales level in the home nations clash and by the way he's celebrated, Wales are really pumped for this.

India beat Pakistan

Commonwealth Games 2022 live: cycling, gymnastics and beach volleyball updates from day three - AP

India have cruised home to victory at Edgbaston, beating Pakistan by eight wickets in less than 12 overs. Smriti Mandhana finished with an unbeaten 63 off 42 balls. She scored two thirds of India's runs.

That's a statement from India but poor from Pakistan, they were not disciplined enough with the bat and you don't win many games of cricket if you're bowled out for 99. In all five cricket games that have been played so far, the team who have won the toss have lost. Quite a nice stat.

Australia will play Barbados later today - let's see what happens with that toss.

02:22 PM

End of the first quarter in England vs Wales

01:35 PM

Elsewhere in the games

While we wait for news on Matt Walls, we can bring you some updates from elsewhere at the games.

India have bowled Pakistan out for 99 in the cricket. In a disappointing performance from Pakistan's batters they failed to bat out their overs, two remained at the end of their innings. Sneh Rana and Radha Yadav both took two wickets a piece. India are now beginning their chase.

England have beaten Cyprus in the table tennis men's quarter final. Tom Jarvis, Liam Pitchford and Paul Drinkhall took a 3-0 victory over Cyprus.

Huge, huge crash in the men's scratch race

There has been a horrible crash in the velodrome in the scratch race qualifying. A rider has ended up over the barrier into the front row of the crowd. Reportedly a rider has been taken out on a stretcher and a bike has also gone into the crowd. The race has been stopped and medical attention is required for a number of riders.

After Joe Truman's horrible crash yesterday with Matthew Gaetzer which left him with a broken collar-bone there will be concern here for the riders. Most of them are back on their feet but some still requiring medical attention.

12:51 PM

Gold medal winners Katie Crowhurst and Jess Fullagar have been speaking to the media

Katie Crowhurst:

"It's amazing! I wouldn't have been able to do it without the home crowd and Jess. It's really tough competition and everyone's been amazing, it's just been a really amazing experience.

"Every race is tough but you've just got to push through it because I got a really bad stitch at the start of the run and I was like 'Jess I'm in pain' but it was great to have the support and it helps push through the pain."

Jess Fullagar

"It was insane, the crowds were there. It was raining when we started and I was a bit nervous that the crowds wouldn't come but they were there and it gave me so much desire the push on. The Canadians weren't that far and I was like 'this is it, it's go time' and we smashed it."

Katie Crowhurst looked to be suffering with a stitch towards the end of the run discipline of the triathlon, but her and Jessica Fullagar are so far ahead it doesn't matter. They reach the blue matting to a massive cheer from the crowd and cross the line. England have the gold medal in both the men's and the women's PTVI Triathlon!

12:36 PM

Chad le Clos in action in the pool

South Africa's Chad le Clos needs just one more medal to equal the Commonwealth Games record of 18. He will go up against Scotland's Duncan Scott who won gold in the 200m freestyle and took bronze in the 400m individual medley. The finals of the men's 200m butterfly will take place this evening.

Molly Renshaw and Abbie Wood also had a good morning in the pool, qualifying for the final of the women's 200m breast stroke.

12:29 PM

News from elsewhere

We'll keep you updated on Katie Crowhurst and Jessica Fullagar's progress in the women's event but just to round up a few other bits of news:

England have also beaten Wales in Coventry in the rugby sevens. Team England had an awful sevens day yesterday which put them out of medal contention but after victory today the men's team will go into the 9th/10th place match tonight.

David Ellis and his guide Luke Pollard are into the last lap of the run in the PTVI men's para triathlon. They're leading by around five minutes from the next placed duo. They're on to the blue carpet to cheers from the home crowd. They're handed an English flag from an onlooker and celebrate as they cross the line.

David Ellis's family are cheering in the crowd, a very emotional moment for Ellis and Pollard. They suffered a mechanical failure in Tokyo which put paid to their chances there, they will take home the gold today.

12:11 PM

England also in gold position in para-triathlon

David Ellis (guide Luke Pollard) is in gold medal position into the running discipline in the para-triathlon. The European champion is well out in-front with just a few kilometers to go.

England's Katie Crowhurst (guide Jessica Fullagar) is also leading the women's race and has just gone safely through transition into the run. This could be a golden hour for England.

More from Commonwealth Champion Jake Jarman

Commonwealth Games 2022 live: All the action from day three in Birmingham - REUTERS

"I just felt like the team comp was the most important day and all the other finals after that were a bonus. It's an absolute privilege just to be here and I just wanted to get out here and have fun and enjoy the atmosphere and the support the crowd especially competing with my teammates. It's a special experience.

"To be honest I don't really know what to say I'm a bit speechless. We'll never have another experience like this ever again and I just want to thank everyone for all of their support."

12:00 PM

"The pain was immense" - James Hall

Jake Jarman and James Hall have been speaking to Matt Baker on the BBC coverage after receiving their medals.

Jarman:

"I don't usually get emotional but I did get a little bit. It's quite overwhelming with all the support from the crowd and I couldn't have asked for a better experience and a better competition. Competing with James, my man, he's been through it and it's inspirational to watch him get through, especially those last two pieces. I don't know how he did it."

Hall:

"Honestly, looking back I don't know how I did it but, I know how I did it. It was this guy (Jarman). Straight away he helped me, straight away he was there. It get's me really emotional with the crowd lifting me. There's no way if I was in the gym at home or any other competition there's no way I could've done it. Everyone here lifted me.

"The pain was immense but these guys, I've got them to thank and Jake. He's a champion, he's my hero.

11:52 AM

In other news...

We'll come back to the gymnastics arena later this afternoon for the women's all-round event. In other news Jack Carlin has qualified for the sprint semi-finals over in the velodrome. He's beaten England's Hamish Turnbull in the semi-finals.

We mentioned Jaswant Singh Shergill in the men's 67kg weightlifting earlier but he's just finished in fourth position so no medal for him.

India vs Pakistan has just got underway with Pakistan winning the toss and batting. Every team who's won the toss so far in the cricket has lost the match so we'll see whether that stat remains in place later on.

Jake Jarman and James Hall lead out Marios Georgiou of Cyrpus who finished in third position and take their places behind their respective podium spots.

The crowd give James Hall a big round of applause in recognition of the courage he showed in completing his rotations today with that ankle. He takes a deep brath before Jake Jarman's name is called out. An even bigger roar meets the gold medalist who is still beaming. He's given a little cuddly toy of the mascot alongside his medal before Jerusalem is played and the two St George's Crosses are raised next to each other.

Stirring stuff!

Jake Jarman and James Hall have an English flag wrapped around both of them and are waving to the crowd. Hall looks disappointed but on that ankle getting silver is a massive achievement.

Max Whitlock says on punditry:

"He was just consistent. His mindset going in in a competition like that is dangerous to other competitors, he has nothing to lose. He went from strength to strength coming out on top."

Jarman is grinning from ear to ear. He really has been excellent today and supporting Hall and Karnejenko until the end. A really good sportsman.

11:31 AM

GOLD FOR JAKE JARMAN

It's not quite to be for James Hall but he'll take home the silver medal. Amazing by Jake Jarman though, what an all-round performance from the 20-year-old. He can add that to his gold medal from the team event on Friday. Fantastic stuff!

11:28 AM

Hall finishes the routine

He does very well and is helped of the floor. That ankle looks so painful... it looks like it will be silver for him but we'll wait and see. What a performance from him.

11:26 AM

Jarman finishes final rotation in top spot

Commonwealth Games 2022 live: All the action from day three in Birmingham - AFP
Commonwealth Games 2022 live: All the action from day three in Birmingham - AFP

Jake Jarman steps up to the high bars to a massive roar from the Birmingham crowd. It's not the most difficult routine so the young gymnast will need to dismount well... he does. Very very impressive.

That will be enough for the medal, but what colour? Gold or silver? It'll all depend on James Hall.

Jarman applauds Pavel Karnejenko and shouts encouragement to James Hall as he awaits his score. It's 13.400! He's in first. Hall needs a big score to take the title... He's up to the bar.

11:12 AM

Para-triathlon underway

The men's and women's PTVI final have started. David Ellis currently in the lead for England, compatriots Oscar Kelly and Iain Dawson are also competing.

Katie Crowhurst is middle of the pack for England in the women's race.

Commonwealth Games 2022 live: All the action from day three in Birmingham - AFP

Well done Jake Jarman. That is a brilliant dismount with barely a step out of place. Karnejenko stays in third with a 12.900 for his high bars routine.

It's 14.100 for Jarman which is enough to keep him in first position. He get's the score whilst sat next to James Hall - I wonder what he's thinking with one round to go and that dodgy ankle. The two English gymnasts in first and second.

11:04 AM

Karnejenko onto the last rotation

Pavel Karnejenko's penultimate piece of apparatus is the high bars. He sits second currently and this could put him in a strong position ahead of the final rotation.

He's through safely with just a small step on the dismount. That'll make sure he's in a high position as he moves over to the floor.

Jake Jarman is just walking up to the parallel bars...

11:01 AM

India vs Pakistan delayed

Cricket is back at Edngbaston today and India are taking on Pakistan. Always a massive match and one that doesn't happen all that often. But the start has been delayed due to some dreary Birmingham weather (shocking).

Both teams lost their first match so will need to win this to advance their qualification hopes for the semi-finals. We'll wait to see what happens if they do get underway.

10:56 AM

James Hall goes top

It's a 14.500! Straight to the top of the leaderboard for James Hall! That was some routine but his ankle must be a concern.

He looks cool and calm sat in his chair but with his last rotation being the high bars that'll be a huge dismount.

10:54 AM

Hall on the parallel bars

James Hall needs a big parallel bar performance, can he deliver? Yes, yes he can.

He executes the routine well and nails the dismount. Ooooooh but after the landing he looks in a lot of pain from his ankle and is supported away. He still has one more dismount to do but he looks in significant pain. He's being seen to by a doctor but it doesn't look good.

How on earth did he manage the dismount in that much pain? What a machine.

It's just been confirmed by British Cycling that Joe Truman, who suffered that horrific crash yesterday, has indeed broken his collar bone and has concussion. He was motionless for a few moments after crashing into Matthew Glaetzer on the velodrome. Let's hope he makes a swift recovery.

Glaetzer has been in action this morning in the sprint qualifying, he finished fourth and is through to the next round.

10:45 AM

Karnejenko through the rotation

Pavel Karnejenko has just gone through his last piece of apparatus - the parallel bars. The routine is okay but there are a few mistakes in there. He just misses the final handstand but puts in a score of 13.400.

Jarman stays out in the lead with Karnejenko in second and James Hall down to third.

Two more rotations to go.

The men's sprint qualifying has finished and Jack Carlin is through. The Scot qualifies in third position with a time of 9.599 seconds. He'll be joined in the second round of competition by the English duo of Hamish Turnbill and Ryan Owens who finished in 6th and 15th respectively, as well as compatriot Ali Fielding.

10:36 AM

Shergill in weightlifting medal position

The final of the men's 67kg weightlifting is in full swing at the NEC and England's Jaswant Singh Shergill  is in third position. They're about half-way through now but we'll just keep an eye on his progress.

Jarman on the vault

Commonwealth Games 2022 live: All the action from day three in Birmingham - PA
Commonwealth Games 2022 live: All the action from day three in Birmingham - PA

Jake Jarman runs up to the vault and launches himself off the springboard and executes a three and a half twist. He lands well but just takes half a step. That should score highly.

It's massive!!! 15.300 and it puts him into the lead, that'll take some beating.

10:25 AM

Hall's enquiry rejected

As you were. Hall's enquiry has been rejected and his difficulty score stands. Both Englishmen move to their fourth piece of apparatus - the vault

10:21 AM

Hall submits enquiry to the judges

James Hall has just submitted an enquiry about his difficulty score on the rings. His score was down on his qualification so he's requesting the judges to reconsider whether his difficulty score should be upped.

We'll wait to see what the outcome of that enquiry it. He currently sits on 41.000 points with Pavel Karnejenko ahead of him on 41.600

The men's sprint qualifying is happening this morning in the Lee Valley velodrome. The top-16 out of the 27 riders will go through to the next round of competition.

Those 27 riders include Jack Carlin following his kerin silver yesterday evening. Ryan Owens, Hamish Turnbull and Hayden Norris are the English hopefuls in that event.

Turnbull has been out already and currently leads the standings with a time of 9.790. Owens sits thirds with plenty of riders still to go.

The results of qualifying will also set the seeding order in the next round of competition.

10:10 AM

Second place for Hall

13.300 for James Hall. He moves down to second behind Pavel Karnejenko who had that very high-scoring vault.

An all home nations top three.

10:07 AM

Jarman stays second

Hall's off to a strong start, very well controlled. Slight adjustment on the dismount but it looked very strong. We wait to see what the score is

13.300 for Jake Jarman on rings, he stays in second place.

Jarman makes a measured start and is into the crucifix position. The routine picks up pace as he twists round and round. He goes for the dismount and absolutely nails it! A very strong base - while we wait for the score James Hall steps up for his rings routine.

10:02 AM

Karnejenko with a strong vault

Pavel Karnejenko who sits in third position is up to the vault. It's a high difficulty and he executes it well. The Scotsman really is doing a brilliant job here.

It's a 14.300... very very good

New Zealand are taking on Pakistan in the hockey and it's close. The third quarter has just started and New Zealand are leading 2-1. The Kiwis drew to Scotland on Friday whilst Pakistan also drew to South Africa in their first match.

This one could be a close one...

09:52 AM

Trouble on the dismount for Magalhaes

Igor Magalhaes from the Cayman Islands has just fallen over on his dismount. That must be an extremely difficult moment for any gymnast but he's still smiling. Apparently he travelled here as a reserve and wasn't meant to be competing and he's only 18-years-old. The crowd are giving him a big cheer - lovely stuff.

09:48 AM

Hall replaces Jarman in first position

Commonwealth Games 2022 live: All the action from day three in Birmingham - Getty Images
Commonwealth Games 2022 live: All the action from day three in Birmingham - Getty Images

A little bit of difficulty on the dismount handstand for Hall. As he tries to push his body up into the vertical position he just looks to struggle to get his legs in the right position. He's through nonetheless and it looked to be solid enough in the main part of the routine.

He now takes the lead! 14.250 is a really really big score - It's the two Englishmen fighting it out at the minute.

Wales's Josh Cook just put in a very good twist on the vault. The landing was very good and it puts him up into fourth.

09:45 AM

Jarman goes top

Jarman gets through his routine. A few little hesitations and his legs aren't quite as tight together as they should've been but that is a solid performance from the man from Gunthorpe.

13.350! That's a very good score and well up on his qualification. He's in first position!

Let's see what James Hall can do

09:43 AM

Second gymnastics rotation

Mikhail Koudinov has an impressive pommel horse routine on his second piece of apparatus. He scores a 13.650.

Commonwealth Games 2022 live: All the action from day three in Birmingham - Getty Images

Pavel Karnejenko is on the rings. He's suited to this piece of apparatus and the dismount is brilliant, barely even a wobble as his feet get back onto solid ground. It is a very impressive score of 14.140 which puts him straight up into first place.

Georgios Angonas puts in the highest pommel horse score of 13.900 which puts him in second place. Jake Jarman is next onto the pommel.

09:34 AM

Back to the bowls

Amy Pharaoh is in a real contest against Olivia Eunice-Buckingham! It's ten all at the minute and the English competitor has come back from two points down.

Dee Hogan has taken a two point advantage over Laura Daniels. They stand at 9-7.

09:31 AM

England finish first and second in rotation one

Jake Jarman and James Hall keep their medal positions at the end of the first rotation. They will move to a different piece of apparatus in a few minutes time

09:28 AM

Medal table update

Just a quick update on where we stand in terms of the medal table:

1. Australia (13 golds, 8 silvers, 11 bronzes - 32 total)

2. New Zealand (7 golds, 4 silvers, 2 bronzes - 13 total)

3. England (5 golds, 12 silvers, 4 bronzes - 21 total)

4. Canada (3 golds, 3 silvers, 5 bronzes - 11 total)

5. Scotland (2 golds, 4 silvers, 6 bronzes - 12 total)

...

13. Wales (1 silver, 2 bronzes - 3 total)

09:24 AM

Hall goes third

Commonwealth Games 2022 live: All the action from day three in Birmingham - Getty Images

James Hall's body writhes and twists through the air as he hurls himself across the floor. His legs are slightly apart on his first landing which will result in a deduction but his final landing is good.

He scored a 13.250 in qualification, he goes third with a 13.450 - up from qualification. He'll go to the pommel horse on the next rotation.

09:21 AM

Gymnastics has started

There are 18 finalists battling it out for all-round individual gold in the gymnastics. Pavel Karnejenko of Scotland has just gone through his pommel horse routine, finishing with a handstand. He puts in a score of 13.150

Jake Jarmon, the first of the team gold medal winners has also just taken to the floor. His opening tumble is huge and he has a little wobble on landing. Growing in confidence throughout the routine though and the rest is solid. He finishes with a tripple twist and is given a score of 14.000 and goes second in this early round of proceedings, just behind Felix Dolci of Canada.

09:10 AM

What's happening today?

We already have some lawn bowls action to get our teeth into. England's Amy Pharaoh came out of a nine-year international retirement to compete in a home Commonwealth Games. She won gold in the 2002, 2006 and 2010 games and is a nine-time Champion of Champions.

However, she's in a tight contest with Olivia Eunice-Buckingham from Niue and is currently 4-2 down. She will need to recover fast if she's to have the fairy-tale return she's hoping for.

Scotland are also  in bowls action against Wales in the singles event. Laura Daniels and Dee Hoggan are battling it out, currently at 4-3 in favour of Daniels.

Soon we'll head back to the gymnastics arena where the men's all-round artistic final get's underway. Plenty of stars from England's Friday victory in the team event will return for this competition including James Hall and Jake Jarman.

Jaswant Singh Shergill is involved in the men's 67kg weightlifting final at the NEC. That's getting started in around half an hour.

The velodrome will also be busy this morning with men's sprint, tandem and scratch qualifying all taking place.

There are plenty of heats happening in the pool with Scotland's Duncan Scott hoping to claim his second gold of the games after he missed out in the men's 400m individual medley yesterday, instead winning bronze.

Good morning

Welcome to the live coverage of day three of the Commonwealth Games. There's lots of action coming up today with events already underway, but first lets recap what happened yesterday.

In the first event of the day England took home a gold medal as Johnboy Smith claimed the top-spot in the men's T53/54 marathon event after six-time Paralympic champion David Weir suffered a puncture from the lead of the race. Weir had been out in front by over a minute and a half before his tyre burst. In the women's category Eden Rainbow-Cooper took a silver medal - her first at a major championship.

Adam Peaty stormed back into action in the pool after fracturing his foot just ten weeks ago. England's double Olympic Champion cruised through his 100m breaststroke heat and then went a second faster in the semi-final.

It was a bad day for England's rugby sevens teams. Both the men's and the women's sides lost to New Zealand, putting them out of medal contention and they will only compete in placement matches for the rest of the tournament. You can read about that dismal performance here.

Netball and cricket group stages continued, England winning their matches against Malawi and Sri Lanka respectively. Team England also came out on top against Ghana in the hockey in a confidence boosting 12-0 victory.

A scary crash in the velodrome left Joe Truman briefly unconscious after he collided with Matthew Glaetzer in the second-round of the men's kerin. In worrying scenes he was taken away to hospital in a wheelchair and has a suspected broken collar-bone.

The day rounded off in a much happier light as England won the women's artistic gymnastic teams final, following the men's victory in the same event on Friday. In a tightly fought final they finished just 3.100 points ahead of Australia, with Canada taking the bronze.
