Community centre plan for youths with nothing to do

Plans to give youths in a part of Plymouth something to do and reduce social isolation have been unveiled. A scheme submitted would see a multi-use community space for the use of organisations that provide services and support for young people created at 9 Ernesettle Green.

The unit is currently empty, and plans have been approved to convert it into a two-bed flat. But these plans would see it redesigned to become an accessible open plan community space.

A statement with the planning application says: “The proposed development will create a local multiuse community space specifically for the use of organisations who provide services and support for young people.

“Ernesettle has seen the closure of many other community spaces in the recent past and the establishment of this new centre would provide a much needed additional space where young people can safely access the support they need to help them flourish, reduce social isolation, build skills and improve mental wellbeing.”

There would be a kitchen area for preparing meals and providing food education, office rooms, and a stage and performance area to encourage young people to explore creative arts, the statement adds. Opening hours would be drawn up in order to protect neighbouring properties.

Plymouth City Council planners will determine the fate of all the new applications listed below at a later date. Below is the full latest list of planning applications that have been submitted this week.
