'Community heroes' praised for helping driver who mounted pavement in medical emergency
Members of the public have been praised for their quick response when a driver suffered a medical emergency and mounted the pavement in a south Derbyshire village. A quick-thinking woman - a retired head secretary called Margaret, aged 83 - gave a lift to a police officer, who was on foot, to the scene.
Upon arriving, there were several members of the public already helping the motorist at the scene of the incident in High Street, Repton, on Saturday, October 5.
The police officer lifted the driver out of the vehicle, where a school nurse, Nicola, from Repton School, was able to perform first aid until an ambulance arrived.

The man was then taken to hospital for assessment and treatment after receiving medical attention on the scene.
The police officer said: “Due to the rural nature of the Mercia policing beat, it is common for police to attend medical emergencies whilst on duty. This was a challenging incident, which was helped in no small part by the actions of Margaret and Nicola – along with several other unidentified members of the public.
“The driver was also eager to pass on his appreciation to Margaret, nurse Nicola, and everyone else who assisted police and paramedics at the scene. These true, community heroes can all be proud of their kindness – and I offer my thanks to all of them.”
However while dealing with the incident, another motorist who was partially blocked by the emergency services “hurled abuse out of his vehicle window”, and Derbyshire police are currently appealing for more information about the male driver.
