Composer Luca D'Alberto reveals 'Her Dreams' video directed by Rahi Rezvani

Italian composer Luca D'Alberto has revealed the stunning video for his track "Her Dreams", directed by acclaimed video director and photographer Rahi Rezvani [Editors, Versace].

The song is taken from D'Alberto's debut album Endless which was released last year. It features Dutch actresses Gaite Jansen (Peaky Blinders, Line Of Duty) and Gepke Witteveen, offering a poignant take on the notion of looking back on one's youth, and the advice you might give to your former self.

The steady mechanical 'ticking' sound beneath D'Alberto's deft, lilting piano notes works perfectly in evoking the theme of the passing of time - the dramatic, haunting cut to the outside world as his music is heard faintly through the closed window with the rustling of leaves in the trees is a brilliant touch from Rezvani.

D'Alberto says of the video: “Rahi and I first spoke about collaborating in 2011 when we met in Rome and spent some days together discussing how we could work together one day. Our desire was always that when we eventually work together, we would combine my music and his art into one singular breath.”

Rezvani explains: "I've known of Luca's work for a couple of years now, long before the album Endless. We met through a mutual friend who is active in cinema. I am always impressed to see how a young man can create such deep layered music.

"We had been talking for a long time about collaborating together, but due to both of our busy schedules we were not able to set it up until now. The moment Luca asked me to create a video for “Her Dreams”, I listened to the song again and realised that it is one of the more complicated songs from this album to create a video for.

"I started thinking about it and realised it should be a short film instead of a video clip. That’s why I chose to work with two talented Dutch actresses, Gaite Jansen and Gepke Witteveen. I believe his music makes people able to open up their imagination and create an image, or a dream, with the music which represents a past event in their life or maybe a future happening.

"When I talk to my mother or older women, I notice they talk often about themselves as a younger girl. Somehow this gave me the inspiration for this short film, going back into her dreams and thinking about how it was as a younger woman."

D'Alberto adds: "The film for 'Her Dreams' is about life, about your relationship with yourself, and how it is impossible forget the memories of pain and joy. A man will renounce any pleasure he likes, but he will not give up his memory.

"Gurdjieff wrote: 'You are in prison. If you wish to get out of prison, the first thing you must do is realise that you are in prison. If you think you are free, you can't escape.'

"To me, the air and breath between the images in this video resonates like these words. The images we hold in our minds are very strong but we don't always realise this. These days it is very difficult for people to speak of their personal emotions, and sometimes we prefer to not acknowledge our own condition, continuing on until that god Time gives us the permission to avoid ourselves altogether. Are we ready to feel tomorrow?"
