Congress mouthpiece calls India a 'shit-hole' country

As the US President Donald Trump, along with the First Lady Melania, landed in India on Monday for a historic visit, the Congress mouthpiece, National Herald, published an article calling India a ‘shit hole country’. The article's headline was, “India is the only poor and ‘shit-hole country’ that Donald Trump has ever visited”. The article was written by Aakar Patel.

The article seemingly sought to taunt Trump: "Donald Trump since becoming president has visited 20 countries of which the majority are in Europe. He has been to France four times. He dislikes the developing world and doesn’t want immigrants from what he calls a ‘shit-hole country’, in which list he presumably includes India,” the article went on.

Apart from brazenly denigrating India, the article also had factual inaccuracies. The US president has visited countries such as Philippines, Japan, Vietnam, North Korea, South Korea, Saudi Arabia and Singapore — which are not in Europe. In fact, Trump has been to Vietnam and South Korea twice, as the president.

The article also took swipes at Prime Minister Narendra Modi and asserted that such a visit won't yield much for India. The rancid headline drew sharp criticism on social media with Netizens ridiculing the Congress and the author for deriding their own country to score petty political points.

After the outrage, the newspaper has changed the headline.
