The Conners could bow out with its sixth season, according to executive producer Bruce Helford.

Currently at the tail end of season 5, this popular Roseanne spin-off features John Goodman in the role of family man Dan Conner, alongside Laurie Metcalf as Jackie Harris-Goldufski, Sara Gilbert as Darlene Conner-Olinsky and Lecy Goranson as Becky Conner-Healy.

Speaking to TVLine while he awaits ABC's renewal of the show, Helford recently opened up about the possibilities facing its makers, and his hopes of one more season in the titular role to say a proper goodbye to the show.

"Sara Gilbert expressed to the network that we don't want to go out without knowing that we are going out with a series finale so we can build to the right ending — and at this point in time, we feel that [next season] is possibly going to be the last season of The Conners," he revealed.

"I would not [say that] definitively because the numbers were so good this season, and we've all had a really great time... but it's definitely a possibility."

The Writers Guild of America strike, which officially commenced this week, could also work against the sitcom's output, with Helford suggesting that a potential season 6 will be shorter than fans are used to.

"The conversation right now is about how many episodes can we do [depending on] whatever happens with the writers' strike," he added.

"There may only be 13 episodes. Obviously, we always want to do 20 or 22 [episodes], but at this point in time, we're talking about if we can do 13 — God willing — and if we can do more, we'll do more."

Here's hoping!

The Conners airs on ABC in the US.
