Amid all the controversy surrounding it, it looks like Roseanne spin-off The Conners will not only be back for a second season, but an extended one, too.

Deadline is reporting that negotiations are under way for a 13-episode run of the sitcom, which is two episodes up on the first season – and four on the Roseanne revival.

Despite its relatively rosy future at ABC, The Conners hasn't exactly set the ratings alight – declining significantly on the initial Roseanne figures.

Even with its pretty bleak twist in writing out Roseanne Barr's leading character, The Conners' first episode drew in 10.5 million viewers against Roseanne's 18.2m debut.

That said, it's still been the number one new comedy of the season in terms of viewers, and ABC's most-watched comedy too.

Roseanne Barr, who was dismissed from the series after a number of racially-charged tweets, was not at all impressed with the Conner matriarch's exit.

Shortly after The Conners' debut, Roseanne criticised the character's opioid overdose as "unnecessary, grim and morbid".

"This was a choice the network did not have to make," she said. "Roseanne was the only show on television that directly addressed the deep divisions threatening the very fabric of our society."

Series regulars Sarah Gilbert, John Goodman, Laurie Metcalf, and Lecy Goranson are all expected to return for The Conners season two. A return for Roseanne Barr, though? Not impossible, actually.

The Conners airs on ABC in the US.
