Conor Gallagher future at Chelsea 'needs to be fixed' amid Aston Villa transfer links

Conor Gallagher's situation at Chelsea is something that needs 'fixing', former manager Mauricio Pochettino warned before his departure from Stamford Bridge. Aston Villa have been credited with an interest in midfielder Gallagher, who is hoping to make Gareth Southgate's England squad - after next week's friendly matches against Bosnia & Herzegovina and Iceland - for EURO 2024.

Gallagher, 24, has enjoyed a breakthrough in the last couple of years after a series of loans which took him to Charlton Athletic, Swansea City, West Brom and then Crystal Palace. Under Pochettino, Gallagher made 50 appearances in all competitions for the Blues last year and has been a regular in Southgate's squad throughout the campaign.

The midfielder captained Chelsea regularly throughout the course of the campaign as they finished sixth, reached the EFL Cup final and the FA Cup semi-finals. Gallagher has netted twice at Villa Park, too, in separate competitions since the turn of the year, but he is heading into the final year of his existing contract.

Villa are keen to increase their options throughout their squad this summer and continue to upgrade various positions as Unai Emery prepares to lead the club into the Champions League in the new campaign. They could, as a consequence, take advantage of Chelsea's PSR situation to strike a deal for Gallagher. Pochettino, who recently left Chelsea after a single season at the club, clearly valued Gallagher and warned the Blues the case needed resolving.

“I think you can see in my starting XI, I think the whole season, was strong with him," he said towards the end of the season. “He’s an important player of course, but I’m not involved in the decision, it’s the club and Conor. I’m not involved, that’s a situation that they need to fix between the club and the player.”
