There’s nothing like a good loser – and Conservative MP Crispin Blunt is certainly nothing like one.

The Tory, who is the uncle of Hollywood actress Emily Blunt, said “the electorate plainly have got it wrong” after his party lost its overall majority.

His bitter comments came in the hours following an exit poll which claimed, with stunning accuracy, how surprisingly the night would unfurl and the government was set to be humiliated.

Asked for his reaction to the poll by the Surrey Mirror, he is the MP for Reigate, he said: “Like everyone else I was astonished.

“Some people say the electorate never get it wrong, clearly they have got it wrong. They’ve made it clearly tough for any party to form a government.”

Blunt’s career has not been without controversy.

He has admitted in parliament that he users poppers and in 2010 he admitted he was leaving his wife of 20 years to “come to terms with his homosexuality”.

Openly gay, it remains to be seen how happy Blunt will be with his party’s decision to forge a government with the Democratic Unionist Party, which openly opposes same sex marriage .

Blunt, who has been an MP since 1997, won his seat with a majority of over 17,000.
