An MP won a new fan after rescuing a constituent from the roadside when gale force winds caused by Storm Dennis hit left her stranded.

Virginia Crosbie, Conservative MP for Ynys Môn, had been the target of complaints by constituent Siobhan Davies since her election last year.

The tables were turned on Sunday when the Essex-born MP picked up Davies, who was thumbing a lift home during the storm.

Davies posted on Twitter: “So. Awkward moment. I have bad-mouthed our Ynys Môn Tory MP Virginia Crosbie so many times on sm. and then tonight in gale force winds when I thumbed a random car down for a lift home - who stopped? Yup. The woman herself. Oops. Think she’ll friend me on fb?”

Crosbie is the first Conservative to represent the Welsh seat since 1987.

The mother-of-three replied to the tweet saying: “I was glad to help you get home safely #StormDennis.”

Storm Dennis wreaked havoc across Britain over the weekend as winds reached up to 91mph.

Environment minister George Eustice said on Tuesday that the government can’t protect everyone from flooding, because of climate change.

The Environment Agency’s flood and coastal risk management executive director John Curtin said Storm Dennis accounted for a record 594 warnings and alerts coming in to force, with the Met Office issuing a rare “red alert” for rain.

A “life-threatening” alert was in force in South Wales, where the Met Office issued a red warning due to heavy rainfall and flooding risk.

“It’s quite an extreme move but we have seen widespread falls across the whole region,” forecaster Greg Dewhurst said.

The Met Office said that winds of more than 80mph were recorded across parts of the country, with the highest measuring 91mph in Aberdaron in north Wales on Saturday.
