Aston Villa are said to be offering Ross Barkley a lengthy contract as they look to lure the midfielder back to Villa Park.

Barkley is a free agent this summer as his one-year deal with Luton Town is set to come to an end. He reportedly has interest from a number of Premier League clubs after his excellent season with the Hatters, but Villa appear to be leading the chase for his signature.

Recent reports suggested Villa were closing in on signing the 30-year-old on a permanent basis, three years after his loan spell with the club from Chelsea. And according to the Daily Mail, a three-year contract is being offered in a bid to see off other potential suitors.

Barkley scored three goals in 24 appearances for Villa while on loan in the 2020/21 season. He went on to depart Stamford Bridge a year later and joined Nice. A switch to Kenilworth Road then followed last summer as the Hatters bolstered their squad on the back of promotion.

Although he could not prevent an immediate return to the Championship for Luton, the former England international still enjoyed a fine campaign. He registered five goals and six assists and was crowned the club’s player of the season.

In a recent interview Barkley expressed his belief he can still cut it in the top-flight. Speaking before the season had finished, he said: “I want to play in the Premier League. I want to play in Europe again but I'm not really focused on that now.

"I feel like for the next three years maybe I'll still be in my prime years. I'm enjoying all the moments because I know over the last few years there's been ups and downs, frustrations and great moments.

"Now I feel ready to be at my best, consistent, in a great place in my head as well. I haven't had a lot of mileage over the last few years in my legs, so I feel fresh."
