Firefighters from Gulgong, New South Wales, worked to extinguish a bushfire burning in the areas of Palmers Oaky, Running Stream, Cherry Tree, and Brogans Creek on December 22. By December 23 the fire had grown to more than 10,200 hectares.
Firefighters supported by earth-moving machinery and water-bombing aircraft continued to work across the out of control blaze, NSW RFS said.
The nearby Castlereagh Highway was shut after the fire leaped across it, local firefighters said.
On Monday, the New South Wales Rural Fire service announced that the large-scale Currowan fire had merged with the Tianjara fire burning to the north. Together, the fires reportedly formed an 80 kilometre-long fire front. Dozens of homes and other buildings had been destroyed by the fires. Credit: Gulgong DC Rural Fire Brigade via Storyful
