Convicted murderer who stabbed friend to death in drink and drugs binge escapes from Derbyshire prison

Police are hunting for a convicted murderer who escaped from prison 10 years after he was sentenced to life for stabbing his friend to death.

John Potter murdered John Hudson following a vodka and cocaine binge and was jailed at Newcastle Crown Court in 2008.

Now the 52-year-old has disappeared from HMP Sudbury in Derbyshire and police are trying to track him down.

Potter is described as white, bald and clean shaven male with blue eyes.

He is 5ft 8ins tall, of stocky build with a large number of tattoos, including pictures of a swallow, a devil and the words ‘Debbie’ and ‘Born to raise hell’ on his neck.

He also has a distinctive tattoo of a panther on his right hand.

Potter’s victim suffered 44 separate injuries during the savage attack in August 2007, including two fatal wounds to his chest.

Potter later walked into a police station and told officers: ‘I think I have killed my pal.’

His partner, Louise Chalmers, was later jailed for six months for trying to protect him in the hours after the killing.

She took the shoes Potter had been wearing during the attack and hid them on waste ground.

Chalmers later lied to murder police, claiming she had seen Mr Hudson leave the flat at the time he was murdered.
