Cops 'pulled from police car' after vehicle flips in horror Edinburgh smash

Police officers had to be pulled from their car after the vehicle flipped on its roof after a collision. An eyewitness to the horror smash has shared how he and his wife came to the cops' aid in Edinburgh today.

The incident occurred around 12:45pm on Saturday, September 14, when two vehicles collided at the traffic lights between Kirkgate and Liberton Gardens in the south of the capital.

Dramatic images from the scene show a police car overturned, while the front of a black Kia is severely damaged. Debris from the crash was scattered across the road, as other drivers, including a motorcyclist, stopped to assist.

The police car was en route to an emergency call when the collision happened. Two police officers were taken to hospital, with no other injuries reported, according to Edinburgh Live.

Local resident Marek Soltysiak and his wife witnessed the crash in their rearview mirror and quickly rushed to help the officers from the overturned vehicle.

Speaking to Edinburgh Live, Marek said: "I saw it. The lights were on green for the Kia and the police car had its sirens on and drove slowly through the cross road. I saw it in my back mirror and came back.

"Me and my wife opened the door for the policemen to help them out. My wife has the knowledge to help with injuries and fortunately, they were not needed. Everyone was safe."

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “Around 12.45pm on Saturday, September 14, 2024 a police car responding to an emergency call was involved in a collision with another vehicle on Liberton Gardens in Edinburgh.

“Two police officers were taken to hospital. There were no reports of any other injuries. Enquiries are ongoing to establish the full circumstances. The road was fully reopened around 2pm.”
