Cornish bakery serving the 'ultimate' coffee named among best in the UK
A bakery in Cornwall has been named among the best in the UK. Gorse, an independent sourdough bakery in Newquay, was named as one of the best artisan bakeries in the country by BritishBaker, who released its "bakers dozen" this month.
Gorse, owned by Nat Galliano-Hale and Anna Gerrans, was named the 10th best after only starting the bakery four years ago. They started their venture on the outskirts of Newquay, then demand for high-quality sourdough for café and restaurant clients around Cornwall led the couple to open in the newly developed business space at Lanteague, on the Zelah to Newquay Road.
The bakery has a regularly changing menu of doughnuts, sourdough loaves, croissants and toasties.

At the time of moving the business, Nat told CornwallLive: "Since we started Gorse just after lockdown, it’s always been our dream to have a bigger location and invite customers to sit in - thanks to the support of our local community and customers, we’ve now been able to grow as a business to get to this milestone, as well as creating six local jobs. Our vision is to create a space that visitors come to enjoy superb quality baked goods, as well as tasty coffee – the ultimate duo.
"From the seating area, visitors can also see behind the scenes of life as a baker, which we hope will inspire more people to learn about the craft.”
Nordic influences are reflected in both the interiors and the products of Gorse. With a commitment to supporting other small businesses, all of the interior work was designed and built by Timpson Carpentry, with the wood being felled and milled locally, while Owen Davies from Gulland Rock fabricated the impressive 2m long bread rack and Kim Moore from Cornish Hardwood Supplies crafted the wooden shelves.
Milk is sourced from St Ives based Trink Dairy, and coffee from Foundation Coffee Roasters, also from St Ives.
