Coronation Street’s Bill Roache called out over name blunder

Coronation Street actor Jack P Shepherd jokingly called out his long-time co-star Bill Roache for seemingly forgetting his name.

While appearing on This Morning, Shepherd (who plays David Platt on the ITV soap) revealed that, recently, Ken Barlow actor Roache seemingly forgot his name on the set.

“I've been in the show 23 years. The other day, I’m at work and I'm walking down the corridor and Bill Roache came in with his little leather bag. I go, 'You alright, Bill?' and he goes, 'Morning, David'," explained Shepherd.

“You know when you feel [this small]?” he continued. “23 years he’s known me. I thought, ‘Really, is his where we are?’”

Host Rochelle Humes then added: “It’s hard because you know him personally,” to which Shepherd joked: “I thought I did."

The actor admitted he wasn't about to correct his co-star, though. “I’m not going to go ‘it’s Jack’, that’s going to destroy his brain,” he joked.

But it turns out he's not the only one the legendary actor is a little confused about.

“If it makes you feel better, he calls me Colin,” Colson Smith, who plays Craig Tinker on the soap, then admitted. “It’s happened since day one. I can’t say, ‘Actually, it’s Colson.'”

But there's no bad blood here. Last year in fact, Shepherd revealed that he’d love to be on Coronation Street for as long as Roache or Gail Rodwell actress Helen Worth.

"People want to go off and branch out into other things, and that's fine," he said to Inside Soap. "However, I've always really got on with everyone I work with, and the show still gives me good stories so I'd be silly to leave!"

Roache previously claimed he’d never retire from playing Ken Barlow, but, last year, he revealed he actually once almost quit the soap to pursue a career in film.

"There was a time in the middle of my career, when I was in my 40s, I thought 'If ever I'm going to get out and do something else, now is the time.' But I only thought about it. I never actually did it. I realised I'm really proud of Coronation Street, lucky to be in it,” he said while speaking to Sunday People.

"The work I got, and the big stories two or three times a year, is absolutely brilliant. And the rest of the time it's been enjoyable. Although I did consider other things, I didn't seriously consider them,” he added.

Coronation Street airs on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 8pm on ITV1 and streams on ITVX.
