It all came to a head when Daniel – played by Rob Mallard – was outed as the culprit who pushed Ken Barlow down the stairs. Though his dad Ken stood by him, their family and friends shunned Daniel which sent the Oxford hopeful into a spiral of depression and he was finally tipped over the edge when his girlfriend, Sinead Tinker, rejected him in Friday’s episode.

But viewers were not impressed when he stocked up on cocaine and narcotics and was found unconcious and fitting after abusing the drug and fell into a drunken stupor. Ofcom received at least 69 complaints, and countless more viewers took to Twitter and expressed their anger at the scenes that were shown before 8pm.

A spokesperson for Coronation Street told OK! Online: “We will assess these complaints before deciding whether or not to investigate.”

And Rob said his character is acting out in order to ‘feel something’ following his depression and the guilt from hurting his dad.

He previously admitted: “Because he is depressed and not really feeling anything, he just wants to feel something. He just goes too far.”

Do you think ITV was right to allow the scenes to go out before the 9pm watershed?
