Coronation Street Lisa George's 'upsetting' admission on condition as she confirms show exit date
Coronation Street's Lisa George has confirmed when she will exit the show. The 53-year-old arrived on the Cobbles as Beth Tinker in 2011 and immediately become one of the show's most important characters.
Beth's stories have largely centred around her romance with Kirk Sutherland, who she married in 2015. However, Lisa appeared on today's edition of This Morning and confirmed that Friday will be her final episode as she exits the show. Lisa appeared on the sofa alongside co-star, Jodie Prenger, and admitted it feels strange that her time on the Cobbles will come to an end
She told hosts Craig Doyle and Sian Welby: "I don't think it's sunk in yet, I don't think it will until I'm not on screen anymore. The fact that Friday will be my last scenes. I think it will start to sink in then. It's a bit scary."
This Morning broadcast scenes from Lisa's first episode when she appeared with her on-screen son, Craig Tinker, played by Colson Smith. Lisa was in disbelief at how quickly time has passed as she said: "Was that really 13 years ago? That's incredible. It just flies by because you're in such a different world in the Weatherfield bubble."
Lisa agreed the show had a "life-changing" impact as she said: "I still walk around not realising people recognise me because I'm just in my very normal bubble." Lisa has already got her next job lined up as she will appear in Cinderella at the Wyvern Theatre, Swindon.
Fans feared Lisa could soon quit the show last year when she didn't make an appearance in the Super Soap Week episodes. However, she told Mirror Online at the Pride of Britain Awards last year she signed a new contract as she addressed the rumours about her show exit.
I've got a new contract. It's really weird, everyone was saying you're leaving, you're leaving. I was asked about my contract and I said I was waiting, and so they asked what I'd like to do if I didn't get one and I said Call The Midwife. That's all I said it was a passing comment then the next thing, everyone is ringing me like, 'you're leaving, you're leaving'.
"I was like no, what's all this, no, I don't know anything about it. It's just weird I don't even know how it happened from the passing comment." Lisa confirmed she was forced to miss the Super Soap Week episodes after she contracted coronavirus.
She said: "I was gutted as I really liked the scenes as well, it was Super Soap Week and there was a sudden rush of covid and we were dropping like flies, and unfortunately I got it as well."
The soap star has previously revealed she signed up to Dancing On Ice in 2020 as she was inspired to start her weight loss journey after battling Type Two diabetes.
She told Mirror Online: "Everyone is saying it will be nice for people to see the real me. But actually, I agreed to do it because I am turning 50 in October this year, which is a huge deal, and I am determined to get fit. Instead of fat and diabetic, which I currently am.
"I have Type 2 diabetes which I want to get rid of." Lisa was diagnosed with the condition in 2016 after feeling chronically tired. Reflecting on her diagnosis, she said: "I was really upset.
"I knew I hadn’t felt well for about two years. I’d gone to the doctors and told them how dreadful I felt. They took my blood sugar and it was sky-high.
“They put me on insulin tablets. I was really upset – I already knew I was pre-diabetic and I’d half-heartedly tried not to go into diabetes. I’m not making any excuses for myself, but the doctor did say I was probably going to get it anyway with my mum being Type 1 and my dad being Type 2.
“So I could sort of let myself off the hook a little bit – but I was really upset because it does make you feel rubbish.” Since her diagnosis, Lisa has been working hard to beat the condition and made some lifestyle changes to prevent it getting any worse. She shed just under a stone through power walking and using her exercise bike.
Lisa said she suffered a setback with her fitness journey a year after Dancing On Ice when she suffered with symptoms of the menopause, which forced her to take a brief break from Corrie. She told Ranvir Singh on an episode of Lorraine: "The menopause hit me like a brick.
"I was suffering with the hot sweats, emotionally.... It started actually on Dancing On Ice when the mechanics of things were going a bit haywire. Then last year [2021] my weight had piled on, it affected my diabetes.
"I spoke to an endocrinologist going, ‘I can’t cope, what’s going on?’ She said, ‘It’s messed your diabetes up. It’s gone off the scale.’ So I had to see a specialist nurse to get me back with my sugars."
