Coronation Street sparks complaints with Ryan's acid attack storyline

Coronation Street spoilers follow.

Coronation Street has been hit by a number of complaints following the devastating acid attack scenes that left Ryan in hospital.

In the scenes, Daisy's stalker Justin had planned to throw acid at her on her wedding day, but Ryan, who was Daisy's chauffeur for the day, intervened and took the full force of the horrific attack.

Ofcom has now received 72 complaints related to the acid attack, while some viewers claimed on social media they thought it was "too dark" of a storyline for the ITV soap.

After the episode aired, one disturbed viewer tweeted: "Just watched the acid attack on #Corrie. Very chilling. To be honest, I don’t know why soaps have to go that dark."

"Can’t believe #coronationstreet would air something like that! Shocking," wrote another, while a third wrote: "A family soap showing an acid attack is beyond desperate."

However, not everyone agreed.

Many other viewers praised the soap for tackling such a difficult storyline, with one impressed fan writing: "That was the most intense episode of #Corrie I’ve seen in a long time.. the acting was fantastic tonight from @CharlieJordanxo and Ryan Prescott. Well done to @itvcorrie and the whole team."

Previously explaining why he wanted to shed some light on this kind of attack, Corrie producer Iain MacLeod said: "We were keen to show the long-term reality for people who are subjected to this kind of attack.

"It is something we might often read about in the papers but perhaps don't fully understand, in terms of the depth and variety of effects it can have.

"As well as the medical impacts, we explore the social fallout of having your appearance profoundly changed, both in terms of your own ability to process that and how the wider world reacts to you. The story will at times be heartbreaking, but we felt it was an important one to tell."

Coronation Street has been working on Ryan's storyline with guidance from The Katie Piper Foundation and Acid Survivors Trust International (ASTI), which both offer help and support to real-life survivors.

Coronation Street airs on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 8pm on ITV1 and streams on ITVX.
