Coronation Street star Alison King breaks silence on Peter Barlow exit

Coronation Street spoilers follow.

Coronation Street star Alison King has broken her silence on Peter Barlow's exit.

Her co-star Chris Gascoyne will take a sabbatical from the ITV soap after 23 years as the legacy character, though it remains to be seen how Peter will be written out.

In a recent media call, Alison King was asked by Digital Spy whether she planned to stay on the cobbles once Chris officially exited the soap.

"Yes, I think so," she told us. "I hate it when he leaves me. But luckily, I just hand him over to his normal wife and let her have him for a bit, and then he comes back, and he can have his on-screen wife for a bit!

"It never feels like we're far away from each other because we know each other so well now. So, it'll all be alright! It will all come out in the wash."

The weeks ahead are set to be rough for the pair, as they're both tied up in serial killer Stephen Reid's dramatic exit from the cobbles.

The couple will seek to prove Stephen drugged Carla with LSD to gain more power at the factory, leading to a shocking confrontation between Peter and the murderer.

When Carla goes to the police with her theories, she's disappointed by the cops asking her not to pursue the matter because they're currently investigating Stephen for other crimes.

"The police say that Carla does need more evidence but that she shouldn't be doing anything about it. She shouldn't make him suspicious — which, of course, Carla being Carla, she's gone and done straight away," Alison told us.

"So Carla has to backtrack on that and secretly suspect Stephen but pretend everything is fine and apologise to him, which is really annoying! It makes her look like she's going a bit weird again, which is kind of what Stephen wants."

Coronation Street airs on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 8pm on ITV1 and streams on ITVX.
