Coronation Street star Dame Maureen Lipman announces engagement
Coronation Street star Dame Maureen Lipman has announced her engagement to partner David Turner.
The actor spontaneously popped the question after attending the launch of Tom Parker-Bowles' latest cooking book. She recalled the busy events that led up to the proposal in a piece written for The Spectator.
"In truth, I had been rather against the 'M' word," Lipman admitted. "But on a train coming back from Edinburgh, he mentioned that it was the minor festival of Tu B'Av – a day when a Jewish woman can ask a man to marry her."

Lipman, who plays Evelyn Plummer on Corrie, said she was "unable to resist the gag", consequently getting onto one knee to ask Turner "for his hand". She added: "To my surprise and slight panic, he gave it."
The couple shared the news with his adult children later that evening, revealing that "with a combined age of 156, we are going to get married".
They then announced the engagement to other family members, with Lipman sharing: "All reactions were warm, and all were individual."

Lipman isn't the only Corrie star planning a wedding, as Jack P Shepherd also revealed his recent engagement to long-time girlfriend Hanni Treweek.
The David Platt actor met Treweek while she worked in the show's script department, and the couple began dating in 2017. A joint Instagram post showed the pair on a safari holiday, where Shepherd proposed to his new fiancée.
His co-stars filled the comment section with congratulations, including well-wishes from his on-screen wife Julia Goulding (Shona Platt) and on-screen son Paddy Bever (Max Turner).
Coronation Street airs on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 8pm on ITV1 and streams on ITVX.
