Coronation Street star Paddy Bever reacts to murder twist

Coronation Street spoilers follow.

Coronation Street star Paddy Bever has reacted to today’s (November 13) shocking episode, which saw his character Max Turner charged with the murder of Joel Deering.

After Carla remembered seeing Max and Lauren putting a suitcase into a car on the night of Joel’s death, suspicion was firmly on the couple.

The pair agreed they would run away together with Lauren’s baby Frankie, but Lauren was devastated when Max suddenly disappeared and handed himself in to the police. After an interview at the station, Max was charged with Joel’s murder.

On playing a major part in the conclusion of this whodunit story, actor Bever said: "I thought it was terrifying because all these people had done so much amazing work on the story, and I come in at the end and have all the final scenes to do.

"It was quite nerve wracking trying to match what was already filmed, which hopefully I did and won’t be letting anyone down!"

Throughout the story, especially since Frankie’s birth, Max has been extremely protective of Lauren, and Bever explained that their shared past plays a major role in this.

"Lauren holds a lot of similarities to Max’s mum, Kylie," he said. "I think Max and Lauren have also experienced a similar trauma in terms of the fact that they were both radicalised into the far-right group and have a lot of shared experiences.

"I also think that Max holds on to people that he really loves and because he’s lost both of his parents, he has a real fixation on finding a family and building that around him."

Max convinced Lauren that they are going to escape the police and go abroad, but this appears to be just a ruse, as Max later abandoned her to confess to Joel’s murder.

Bever explained: "It was a line where Lauren says she’s never going to get her happy ever after, and that was the exact moment where Max decides she will get her happiness and he wants to make sure of that.

"Max tries to talk Lauren into running away, and he does that knowing instantly what he’s going to do and thinks very quickly in terms of how he can protect Lauren."

Though Max is in prison, this might not be the end of the story, as in Friday’s special episode (November 15), the truth will finally be revealed.

"You’ll be able to see what happens on the night Joel died," Bever teased, "so you will see it from the beginning to the end, get the full picture and everything will be made clear. And of course, it’s Coronation Street, so there’s bound to be a few twists and turns…"

Coronation Street airs on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 8pm on ITV1 and streams on ITVX.
