Coronation Street fans were shocked as the credits rolled on tonight's episode. Sunday's edition of the ITV show continued to explore Gail Platt's health woes.

The legendary character suffered a cardiac arrest last week and is currently recovering in hospital. Gail was visited by her new love interest, Jesse Chadwick, in the final scene of the latest episode.

The two had an emotional heart to heart as Gail and Jesse discussed whether they would marry. The episode seemingly ended on a positive note when Jesse, played by John Thomson, accepted Gail's proposal.

However, fans were taken aback in the credits when the classic Corrie theme was changed to incorporate the sound of a flatling heartbeat. Viewers following the show on social media platform X were emotional after the change as they speculated it was an indication that Gail would meet a tragic end.

Ruby said: "Seriously, they better not kill Gail off" Claire added: "Was coronation street trying to tell us Gail has died or is going to die? I get the #BHF connection but why was it part of the credits as if someone died"

Morgan posted: "That heart beat thing with the theme fading away gave me the shivers icl." @Twellywatcher posted: "I swear I though they had killed Gail at the end with the heartbeat at the end don't do it again"

Darryl commented: "Love the fading heartbeat during the end credits. Very interesting. Is Corrie trying to tell us something? Is Gail’s health clock ticking…."

Beth posted: "HAVE THEY JUST KILLED GAIL OFF?" Gary posted: "I thought Gail flatlined and that was them telling us she won’t be in it again" Vicky said: "Not gonna lie. That heart rate and the slowing down of the #Corrie theme then really freaked me out"

Although Gail actor, Helen Worth, has confirmed she will be leaving the Cobbles at the end of the year, the real reason for the updated end credits was to raise awareness about heart disease. Corrie bosses have partnereed with the British Heart Foundation to highlight the vital work the charity do.

An advert was broadcaster after the episode aired to put the spotlight on the work of the BHF. Helen will depart the Cobbles at the end of 2024 after 50 years as part of the cast.

The news was announced back in June with Helen, 73, saying: "This year felt like the perfect time to leave the show after celebrating 50 years in the most wonderful job on the most wonderful street in the world. I made the decision at the start of the year and spoke to the producers, who were very kind and understanding."

The legendary soap star added: "I have been truly blessed to have been given the most incredible scripts week in week out, and to have worked with fantastic actors, directors and a brilliant crew. The past 50 years have flown by and I don’t think the fact that I am leaving has quite sunk in yet."
