Coronation Street has announced that the soap's most prolific writer Peter Whalley has passed away.

Peter was at the heart of the Coronation Street writing team for 35 years and wrote 600 episodes, more than any other writer in the programme's history.

Coronation Street and ITV have confirmed the sad news, with the show's executive producer Kieran Roberts paying tribute to a "brilliant writer" and "lovely man".

Kieran said: "Peter was not just a prolific and brilliant writer, he was also an invaluable source of great ideas and equally great wisdom in our story conferences.

"Everyone who knew Peter will also remember the lovely man behind the great writing talent."

EastEnders writer Daran Little also paid tribute to Peter in a message on Twitter, saying: "Devastated by the death of a great friend Peter Whalley who wrote more Coronation Street eps than anyone else. He was a story genius."

Peter was honoured with a Lifetime Achievement award for his work at Corrie during the 2009 British Soap Awards. He went on to retire in 2013.

Coronation Street airs on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays on ITV.
