Billy Mayhew has made a huge mistake following his late husband Paul's funeral in Coronation Street.

Wednesday's (October 2) episode saw Billy make a romantic pass at former partner Todd Grimshaw in a moment of grief after learning the truth about Paul's final moments.

Paul's family previously led Billy to believe he'd spoken to Paul on the phone seconds before his husband succumbed to complications from Motor Neurone Disease (MND). In reality, Paul had passed away just before Billy could make the call.

The devastating truth was revealed by Paul's mother Bernie Winter as revenge for Billy letting Paul's estranged father Denny Foreman attend the funeral.

Billy had conducted a moving eulogy to Paul, but as the mourners filed out of the church, he was confronted by his mother-in-law. The pair argued over which one had best supported Paul.

"I told him how much I loved him," Billy told her, but Bernie interrupted: "He was already dead, Billy!"

Bernie immediately regretted her confession, but it was too late. Billy reeled over the news and was later shown turning up drunk at Paul's wake.

Billy was so inebriated that he fell off a bar stool. As he stumbled outside, Todd tried to catch up with Billy to take him home.

Once he'd got Billy back to his flat, Todd comforted his ex-boyfriend and assured him that all he wanted was to see Billy happy. Billy then moved in for a kiss, which Todd immediately rejected.

"Billy, no, this is not what you want, not at all," Todd insisted.

Billy turned nasty, accusing Todd of leading him on and then catching "stage fright" when he'd tried to make a move. Todd was stunned as Billy ordered him to "get out".

The former vicar then broke down into floods of tears, so Todd moved in to comfort him once again as the sad episode concluded.

Coronation Street airs on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 8pm on ITV1 and streams on ITVX.
