Coronation Street's Nick Tilsley left devastated over son Sam

Coronation Street spoilers follow.

Nick Tilsley is set to be left devastated after learning that his estranged son Sam Blakeman is going on a date with Hope Stape on Coronation Street.

Sam and Nick's partner Leanne Battersby recently told Nick to keep away from them for a while, notably after it was revealed that new bad boy Damon Hay was the brother of evil Harvey Gaskell – who killed Sam's mother Natasha two years ago.

Nick got himself into a mess after accepting money from Harvey in order to save the Bistro, which had been struggling at the time.

In new scenes set to air on the cobbles, Sam and Hope agree to be boyfriend and girlfriend during a chat at the café.

Nick learns a couple of days later from Tyrone that the youngsters are now an item, which reminds Nick of how much he is missing his son, as well as how much he has missed out on since they became estranged.

Hope and Sam head off on their date after getting some money from Tyrone. Nick, meanwhile, is down in the dumps as he admits to Sarah Platt that Sam and Leanne want nothing to do with him.

This gives Sarah an idea – but what has she thought of, and will Nick be able to make amends with his family?

The storyline comes as Coronation Street recently confirmed that the soap will focus on lighter storylines for Hope following her recent spell of violent and manipulative behaviour.

"She's certainly not going to continue going down such a troubled path, in the short to medium to long-term," executive producer Iain MacLeod said on Loose Women last month.

"We thought: 'Actually, we've done some very dark and twisted things with that character, and okay that'll still be part of her, but for the next 12 months we're going to do normal pre-teen stuff.

"We're going to be building a friendship with her and Sam [Blakeman], that will verge on a very innocent pre-teen romance a little bit and they try to navigate those waters."

Coronation Street airs on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 8pm on ITV1 and streams on ITVX.
