Coronavirus death rate among intensive care patients in UK tops 50%

The number of coronavirus patients dying in intensive care units (ICU) in the UK has surpassed 50%, according to a new report.

Data shows 346 patients, from a sample of 690, whose outcomes were known, had died.

That translated to 50.1% of deaths among ICU COVID-19 patients, with 344 being discharged, according to figures from Intensive Care National Audit and Research Centre (ICNARC).

The data revealed 73% of ICU patients with coronavirus were male, with 259 of them dying.

In total ICNARC looked at data from 2,249 coronavirus patients, who had a median age of 61.

The rest of the 1,559 people who were critically ill are still being cared for.

The coronavirus statistics were mostly taken from medical institutions in England, Wales and Northern Ireland and were accurate from Friday midday.

Stats showed just 41 deaths were attributed to people who had diagnosed co-morbidity.

In total 175 people who died were above 70, while 142 victims were aged from 50 to 69.

Just 29 people who died were between 16 and 49..

The Department of Health said the number of coronavirus-related hospital deaths stood at 4,313 as of 5pm on Friday, up from 3,605 the day before – an increase of 708.
