Greater Manchester has been forced into a tier 3 coronavirus lockdown after talks with the government failed, with pubs and bars to be closed for 28 days.

The city region’s visibly furious mayor Andy Burnham asked if the government was “playing poker with people’s lives”, in response to reports that the government’s offer of £60m in support could be rescinded.

It comes as Wales prepares to introduce a nationwide “firebreak” lockdown, which will see residents required to stay at home and all non-essential retail, leisure, tourism and hospitality businesses closed from Friday until Monday 9 November.
