Boris Johnson has announced England’s new test and trace scheme will launch on Thursday, which will see an army of 25,000 contact tracers track down those who have possibly been exposed to coronavirus, asking them to self-isolate for 14 days.

Health secretary Matt Hancock has also announced plans for “local lockdowns” where coronavirus cases flare up as part of the scheme, which he said “must become a new way of life”.

Meanwhile, the Americas have emerged as the new epicentre of the coronavirus pandemic, the World Health Organisation (WHO) has said, as a US study forecast deaths surging in Brazil and other Latin American countries through August.
