'Hideous' coronavirus pandemic inspires Johnny Depp to join Instagram

Johnny Depp has taken his first step into the world of social media, joining Instagram as a result of the “hideous” coronavirus pandemic.

The Pirates Of The Caribbean star, 56, launched his account on Thursday and a day later has already amassed 1.8 million followers.

The actor’s first video shows him sat in what appears to be a candlelit cave, where he waxes lyrical about the pandemic and seems to reference his troubled history with his ex Amber Heard.

He tells his new followers: “This is my first experience within the world of social media.

“I’ve never done any of this before. I don’t think I’ve really ever felt any particular reason to until now.

“Now is the time to open up a dialogue, as the threat of this invisible enemy has already caused immeasurable tragedies and enormous damage to people’s lives.”

During the eight-minute video, Depp goes on to talk about the “hideous global pandemic”, speaking of his sadness at the suffering being experienced by so many.

“I feel we need to try to help each other throughout these dark times,” he said.

The actor said although people may feel that their hands are tied, “our minds are unbound and our hearts are not chained and we can care”.

“Through caring we will help each other and we will prevail,” he said.

Urging his followers to stay inside and keep busy, Depp warned: “We cannot and must not succumb to shutting down and giving in to what feels like hellish quarantine monotony.

“We need to keep ourselves curious as this time in isolation can be used for great learning.”

He went on: “Create something today that will benefit yourselves and others tomorrow. Do anything you think could be of use to brighten someone's day.”

The Fantastic Beasts star said when his children were young and used to say they were bored, he would say boredom was not allowed as there is always something to do.

“Draw, read, paint, think, learn, make a film on your phone, play an instrument if you play,” he said. “If you don't, learn. If you don’t have an instrument, make one."

Appearing to reference his bitter split from ex-wife Heard, he added a personal message to his fans.

“Thank you all for your kindness, your unwavering support and your strength over these years,” he said.

“I’m touched beyond words.”

Depp then revealed he and friend Jeff Beck had unveiled their own take on the John Lennon song Isolation.

He said it was “fitting” for what is happening in the world right now.
