A further 148 people have died with coronavirus in the UK, taking the country’s official death toll to 44,798.

The government figures do not include all UK deaths involving Covid-19, which are thought to have passed 55,000.

Some 820 people tested positive for the virus in the 24 hours to 9am on Saturday, according to the data.

Since the start of the outbreak, 288,953 people in the UK have tested positive for coronavirus, but the Department for Health and Social Care said the true figure of infections was higher because some people have no symptoms or only mild symptoms and are not tested.
