• The Wellcome Trust funds a large amount of scientific research in the UK, in the fields of medicine and a few closely related subjects. But we overstated its role when we said that it had helped to fund “almost every worthwhile piece of scientific research in the UK over the last 20 years”, and that without its research funding “there would be very little world-class science in this country” (Truth is not enough. Cultural battles must be won too, 1 May, page 24).

• Because of an editing error, in later editions a front-page article (PM paves way to end key tax commitments, 1 May) referred to “the Tories’ ‘triple tax lock’ pensions commitment”. That conflated two separate “triple lock” policies that were mentioned in the article: the previous Conservative commitment not to raise VAT, national insurance or income tax, and the pledge that each year the basic state pension will rise by 2.5%, the rate of inflation or average earnings growth, whichever is largest.
