Pat Phelan is going to have to work a little harder if he wants to finish off Daniel Osbourne on Coronation Street, seeing as actor Rob Mallard has re-upped with the ITV soap.

A year after Rob took over the role of Daniel, the actor has revealed that a recently signed contract might guarantee his character's safety at least for the foreseeable future.

"Well I've just signed my second year so as far as it comes for the next year or so, I think I'm quite safe for now but who knows at the end of that?" he told The Sun.

A representative from ITV has also confirmed to Digital Spy that Rob signed his contract extension with Coronation Street back in July.

Mallard made his first appearance on the soap last November, inheriting the role of Daniel Osbourne from both Lewis Harney and Dominic Holmes.

Since that time, Daniel emerged as the culprit in the 'Who Pushed Ken' storyline and carried on a torrid romance with Sinead Tinker. More recently, he's run afoul of the sadistic Pat Phelan.

As for what the future holds, Rob hinted that it's still possible for Daniel to end up with Sinead at some point even though she proposed to boyfriend Chesney Brown in emotional scenes earlier this week.

"Absolutely there's a way back because the only reason she isn't still with Daniel is because when they first got together the drama erupted with the Barlows that she obviously got pulled into," he explained.

"Aside from that they had everything going for them. They were both a little bit left of centre, not really part of any crowd – they didn't have an in-group, they found an in-group with each other, and I think they will always have that.

"When someone can make you laugh, you tend to remember them for quite a long time and you tend to believe what you've got between you is worth it. I think if it weren't for the being afraid of Daniel because of what she found out, she would definitely still be with him, yeah."

Coronation Street airs on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 7.30pm and 8.30pm on ITV.
