Coronation Street star Simon Gregson has praised the NHS for saving his wife Emma Gleave's life.

Over the weekend, Emma took to Instagram to reveal that she was a "couple of hours" away from death after being rushed into hospital.

"Long story short, I needed a scan desperately late last night and due to staff shortages no-one was on call," she explained.

"I owe my life to Dr Arora who travelled to scan me at midnight and performed life-saving surgery on me through the night. Our NHS is amazing!!!!! Everyone here does the work of 10 people on their own!

"Stop the cuts… the NHS are the backbone of our country. Feeling very lucky today."

Simon, who plays Steve McDonald on Corrie, shared Emma's post on Twitter and added: "So three times the wonderful doctors of the NHS have saved my wife's life even when so overworked and at breaking point."

His Corrie co-star, and on-screen mum, Beverly Callard echoed his thoughts by replying to Emma's post: "Oh me too 4 weeks ago. The NHS are truly fantastic!"
