Coronation Street looks set to rock fans next week by killing off a major character without actually showing the demise on screen.

The bombshell will tie into a scene that's previously reported on, in which Chesney Brown (Sam Aston) receives some truly devastating news when he receives a call from Portugal.

Chesney has been separated from part of his family ever since former flame Katy Armstrong (Georgia May Foote) moved away to Portugal with their young son Joseph, but his past will soon be coming back to haunt him.

After being hospitalised for an infection, Chesney's outlook will only get worse when he receives word that Katy's been killed in a horrifying car crash (according to The Sun).

It's a surprising send-off for Katy Armstrong more than two years after Georgia May Foote walked away from the soap to compete on Strictly Come Dancing.

At the time, then-producer Stuart Blackburn insisted that Katy would not be killed and that "the door will be left open for a possible return" while Georgia was full of praise for Corrie.

"I have had an amazing four years on Coronation Street," she said at the time. "I have had some fantastic storylines and worked with some wonderful actors."

Foote earned back-to-back nominations for the Sexiest Female from the British Soap Awards during her final years on Corrie.

Coronation Street airs on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 7.30pm and 8.30pm on ITV.
