Coronation Street has hinted that Carla and Michelle Connor are heading for an almighty argument over Ali Neeson.

Carla (Alison King) made a surprising move this week when she slept with Ali – and they've so far decided to keep quiet about their secret passion.

In Thursday night's Corrie episode (March 22), Ali's mum Michelle was delighted to hear that he was finally warming to her thanks to Carla and Robert both defending her so much.

In the ultimate awkward moment, Michelle then told Carla to continue her charm offensive and joked that she should even sleep with him if she has to.

Still oblivious to what had been going on, Michelle quickly added: "I'm kidding, obviously. I'd kill you!"

Although light-hearted, Michelle's comment tells us that she won't be supportive of any romance between Carla and Ali – no surprises there, of course!

It also sheds new light on previous Coronation Street spoilers which suggested that Michelle and Carla would fall out this year.

When Carla's return was first announced several months ago, Corrie boss Kate Oates told Radio Times: "It's time to break new ground with Carla. I didn't want to put her on that familiar cycle of self-destruction, recovery, followed by more self-destruction.

"What we'll have instead are these two strong Connor women – Carla and Michelle – on opposing sides and in conflict for a change. It'll be a refreshing dynamic for us to see."

Speaking to What's On TV a few weeks later, she added: "I am definitely keen to explore different sides of their relationship.

"They have obviously got Robert in common now which is interesting, but their friendship is really strong, so anything that challenges it will have to feel very truthful and quite deep.

"I just want to explore the dynamics – [it] would be a shame to leave everything as is. What's good about these long-standing friendships is when you challenge them and see what could potentially break them."

Coronation Street continues on Monday (March 26) at 7.30pm and 8.30pm on ITV.
