Coronation Street fans will have a new mystery to ponder next week, as the show drops hints that troublesome Rich Collis may not be Robert Preston and Michelle Connor's tormentor.

The show kicks off a tense new storyline in tonight's episode (July 26) as someone spray-paints "RIP" on the wall of the Bistro as a menacing threat against Robert and Michelle.

Things only get worse later this week as Robert gets mugged and someone throws a Molotov cocktail at the Bistro, setting the door on fire in dramatic scenes.

Of course, Robert and Michelle's first thought is that the incidents are all connected and they're being targeted by Rich as revenge for his recent arrest.

However, when the police eventually report back to the nervous couple, they reveal that Rich has a cast-iron alibi for at least one of the crimes and couldn't have been the Bistro vandal.

This raises the worrying possibility that Rich has someone else doing his dirty work for him – or that the villain behind it all is someone else entirely. Could another enemy be after Robert and Michelle? Or is formidable Rich just really good at covering his own tracks?

Tristan Gemmill, who plays Robert, revealed: "Robert feels totally responsible for what's happening. Rich is his problem from his past and Robert – being the hands-on guy that he is – decides that he has to fix it his way and it sort of spirals out of control because of that.

"He also gets blinded by the severity of what happened with Rich and Chesney, and Daniel's drug overdose. When you have a prejudice against someone, you believe everything quite readily and Robert gets trapped in that because he can't think of any other explanation.

"He is convinced it is Rich and he can't get it out of his head."

Next week, Robert is confused when Rich denies all knowledge of the nasty incidents – which become even more unsettling when Michelle realises she's being watched in a bar while out in town.

Is Rich stepping up his surveillance of Michelle, or is there another explanation?
