Coronation Street's Yasmeen Nazir is currently involved in a coercive control storyline.

The ITV soap has gradually been drip-feeding controlling moments from Geoff Metcalfe toward his wife, with suspicious comments being made by him as far back as six months ago.

Speaking on This Morning, actress Shelley King, who plays Yasmeen, told Eamonn Holmes and Ruth Langsford how important she thinks the slow-burning nature of the storyline had been.

"[It's] a long-term [storyline], which is a good thing about it," she said. "It'll go on for about a year."

She continued: "Soaps in particular, and historically Coronation Street, has explored controversial issues because we have a duty of care to the public. It's in our homes.

"Ian Bartholomew [who plays Geoff], Barty, and I have a responsibility to talk to people and create a believable, understandable and truth-based storyline, and that is what we’re doing.

"We can't be scared of being unpopular as actors."

Shelley also spoke about how important her working relationship with Ian is.

"Barty is the nicest man, we get on so well," she said.

"We have to trust each other because this story is going to get darker and darker, and darker and truthfully darker, based on real stories, that the scriptwriters have heard. If we didn't trust each other, we would not be telling the story in an adequate way.

"What you see is the story will become brutal but not physically brutal, but mentally brutal which is worse in a way. There are over 1 million women suffering every year from this kind of abuse."

Organisations including Women's Aid can provide further support and information on coercive control or coercive behaviour.
