Coronation Street star Lucy Fallon has admitted that she hasn't been able to watch her character Bethany Platt's child grooming plot play out on screen.

Bethany is currently being groomed by sinister newcomer Nathan Curtis in one of the ITV soap's grittiest storylines to date.

While Bethany believes she is in a normal relationship with a man 20 years her senior, she is oblivious to Nathan's unscrupulous intentions.

Bethany might be none the wiser at the moment but fans are acutely aware of the danger she is placing herself in, following last year's reports that the teenager will find herself caught in a sex ring when Nathan attempts to "pimp her out" to his friends.

Speaking on Lorraine today (February 22), Lucy explained why she is unable to watch the controversial storyline unfold on screen, but praised the show for its portrayal of such an important issue.

She said: "I haven't watched it yet as it does make me feel quite uncomfortable, as it does for quite a lot of the viewers.

"But it's so important - so important that we do it, especially at this time, because we are targeting the people watching Coronation Street who are quite young. All the fans are quite young and they are the people we want to target.

"We recently did a scene where Nathan takes Bethany to his flat where there are a lot of men. That was so uncomfortable, it was horrible."

Lucy was appearing on Lorraine alongside Nathan actor Chris Harper - who have both been working alongside the NSPCC for the hard-hitting plot.

Chris added: "Bethany's bright and comes from a good family but she's very open to the confidence building and the manipulation that Nathan pours on her to build her self-esteem.

"What she doesn't realise - and what I think the viewers can realise - is that she doesn't read the signals. He is not in for what she is in for. She is gradually falling in love and he will stick around while he can get something out of it. That's where it's going to get pretty scary."

Coronation Street continues tonight at 7pm on ITV.
