Coronation Street star Lucy Fallon defended Bethany Platt's lap-dancing plot during an appearance on This Morning today.

Speaking to hosts Phillip Schofield and Holly Willoughby, Lucy – who plays Bethany – insisted that it would have been unrealistic for her character to move on from her grooming ordeal completely.

She said: "It would have been really unrealistic for Corrie to move on, leave the storyline and make Bethany happy.

"She's got to go on her own journey. Whether working in a lap-dancing club is the right thing to do is up for debate, but it's her journey and she's got to do it by herself."

Upcoming scenes will see the plot take a more light-hearted turn after Bethany's family learn about her secret job – and decide to check it out for themselves.

Believing that it's Bethany's day off, Gail and Audrey decide to head to the lap dancing club to investigate – unaware that Bethany has been called in to cover for another girl.

Things soon go from bad to worse when the pair ask Bethany's boss Lulu one too many questions, leading her to become suspicious about what they are really up to.

Fans will have to tune in to see how the awkward predicament unravels, but by the end of the night, Bethany has lost her job and is placing the blame solely with her family.

Speaking about the scenes, Lucy said: "It's hilarious, it's so funny. And they may or may not get quite drunk as well. It's a really good scene."

Coronation Street airs on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 7.30pm and 8.30pm on ITV.
