Coronation Street star Rob Mallard has discussed his decision to open up about his sexuality earlier this month.

The actor joined the ITV soap last year as Ken Barlow's son Daniel Osbourne and had reservations over publicly revealing that he's gay, due to his on-screen relationship with Sinead Tinker.

Speaking about the matter further, Rob explained that he hopes the time comes when it doesn't even need to be addressed in the first place - but for now it has to be said.

"I got lots of nice comments on Twitter - the reaction was brilliant," he told Inside Soap. "Lots of people were saying well done, that it shouldn't actually be an issue these days.

"There were actually a few comments from people saying, 'Why do we need to know about this?' - but that's exactly the aim. Why does it need to be said?

"Unfortunately, we are not quite there yet, so these things do need to be said, whether people care about it or not. The comments I've had from people are good, though."

Daniel's love life has been a bit of a talking point on screen recently after he began a romance with Sinead, who was still with her long-term boyfriend Chesney Brown at the time. And the couple are hit with a huge bombshell in upcoming scenes when Sinead realises that she's expecting a baby.

Coronation Street airs on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays on ITV.
