Coronation Street star Chris Gascoyne has predicted that the show will revisit Peter Barlow and Carla Connor's relationship.

The actor's popular character is currently fully committed to Toyah Battersby, but some fans argue that Carla is the woman that he really belongs with.

Carla reappears on the Street this Christmas, catching up with her family and harbouring a huge secret.

Her return doesn't go down well with Toyah, who privately confides in her friend Angie Appleton with her fears that Peter could still have feelings for Carla.

Asked whether Carla is the love of Peter's life, Chris replied: "Peter's trying to pretend she's not. He's saying: 'All right? How you doing?' But how long he can keep that up for, I don't know.

"Poor Toyah! I'm guessing that at some point something will happen between Carla and Peter, because I'm guessing that it's what the viewers will want."

In the meantime, Peter will be taking centre stage in one of his darkest storylines ever, as Christmas Day's hour-long episode sees him kidnap Billy Mayhew and threaten to murder him.

Peter's drastic behaviour comes after he learns that Billy was involved in the death of his twin sister Susan, who was killed in 2001.

Discussing the shocking turn of events, Chris revealed that he never questions his Corrie bosses when they come up with unexpected storyline twists for Peter.

He laughed: "You just have to roll with it, certainly on this show. You can be doing one thing one week and the next thing you're doing something completely contradictory to that.

"As an actor you can go: 'Well, would he do that?', but because the show rolls on so quickly, people can't remember what happened four or five episodes ago. So you have to go with it.

"If you start saying, 'I think my character wouldn't say that…' then you're going to make an awful lot of trouble for yourself. It's like Peter and Daniel. The last thing I said to him was: 'I never want to see you again'. But then we go out and buy a Christmas tree!

"That's a very strong statement at the end of that episode but we're now friendly two months later. So what we've done is had these huge, brilliant scenes off screen that you'll never see, where they have reconciled and moved on. That's all you can do, really."

Coronation Street airs Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 7.30pm and 8.30pm on ITV.
