Corrie star Vicky Myers expects fan backlash over Roy's murder plot arrest

Coronation Street spoilers follow.

Coronation Street star Vicky Myers has revealed she expects fan backlash over Roy Cropper's murder plot arrest.

Myer's character DS Swain has recently become a permanent character in Weatherfield after three years of guest appearances, as the search for Lauren Bolton intensifies.

In scenes set to air next week, Roy will be taken into police custody as Swain makes him the prime suspect in the investigation into Lauren's disappearance.

Speaking to Digital Spy and other press, Myers explained that she's prepared for her character to be disliked by viewers over Roy's arrest.

"I think there may be a fair amount of backlash, but that's okay, I can handle it. Swain can handle it, she's not bothered about that," she said.

"I think being in this iconic show, pretty much as soon as I started and it was the hate crime storyline and the viewers knew it was Corey, I was in my local shopping centre and somebody shouted a bit of abuse at me because I'd arrested the wrong person."

"Obviously that had aired but we'd shot it quite a few weeks before, so I was kind of, 'Sorry?' I didn't understand where it was coming from, then it dawned on me what was going on.

"In the main, people either love her or loathe her but I've had quite a bit of love for her in the recent couple of years. Who knows? I'll cope with it fairly well — I hope."

The actress went on to reveal what it was like filming the emotional scenes, saying: "It was terrible! It was awful! When I read it in the scripts I thought, 'Oh no, this is just going to be awful.' But because everybody is so supportive of each other here, it's wonderful.

"But working with David [Neilson, who plays Roy] is — wow, what a human being. He is so generous and so warm and so considerate. His talent is beyond."

Myers added: "So to sit with him and work with him closely, it's really been a joy and I've got so much respect for the man. He's an icon in every sense."

Coronation Street airs on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 8pm on ITV1 and streams on ITVX.
