Whether you're a Costco customer or not, there's a chance you'll have eaten one of their huge cakes at some point.

The massive chocolate fudge cakes and carrot cakes are often a staple of family parties, mostly because from £11.49 for a giant two-layer cake that serves 14, you're getting a lot of cake for your money.

Previously shoppers were able to just call in and pick one up from the shelves, but now that's all changed - and not everyone is happy about it.

The chocolate cake is still available, priced £11.99, but anyone wanting a large carrot cake or a red velvet cake, priced £11.49, now needs to order in advance.

It's not gone down well with some shoppers, who have branded the move 'ridiculous'.

Commenting on a Facebook page for Costco products, one shopper said: "Went to Costco today for a cake. Red velvet and carrot cake not on display. Told if you want one you have to give 2 days notice. This has come from head office they said. Madness. So no red velvet or carrot cake for the party. Very poor on you Costco Wholesale UK."

Another said: "What a ridiculous ruling from head office - they clearly do not know their best sellers or what the shopper wants!"

Not everyone was sympathetic though, with one responding: "That'll teach you to arrange things in advance rather than at the last minute" and another stating: "Mildly inconvenient, not poor on Costco. If you needed a cake for today why buy it today?"

The Costco website urges customers to 'order before 1pm to collect in three days from your chosen warehouse'.

For anyone who can't wait the three days for their fix, the wholesaler does have another option in the form of carrot cake or red velvet muffins, costing £6.99 for a six pack and readily available in stores.

And as well as the large chocolate cake, there's a rather delicious looking crunchy caramel cheesecake on the shelves too.

Costco declined to comment on the change.
