Could Serie A’s top scorer be on his way to Australia?

Adelaide united chairman Greg Griffin has told the Adelaide Advertiser that the club are “serious” about signing World Cup winner Luca Toni and have asked his European representatives for more details about what it would take to bring the 38-year-old ‘Down Under’.

Toni has been in superb form for Hellas Verona this season and currently sits on top of the Serie A goal-scoring charts, breaking the 20-goal mark at the weekend for the sixth time in his career. He now has an impressive tally of 21 goals from 37 games this season.

His two goals against Parma have put him in pole position to be this years Capocannoniere, as he holds a one goal lead over Juventus’ Carlos Tevez and Inter’s Mauro Icardi going into the final round of fixtures.

After falling one game short of the Hyundai A-League grand final this season, Adelaide are looking to strengthen their squad and look at Italy’s 2006 World Cup winning striker as an ideal candidate.

“If we do something we do it seriously,’’ Reds chairman Greg Griffin told the Advertiser. “Basically we’re looking at this situation with Luca Toni seriously. We’re sitting on the whiteboard working out how we can do it.

“The first thing we have to see is whether it can be achieved and then you look at how you fund it, to be blunt. We’ve got a huge Italian community here and this is also great for other communities to see a fantastic striker.”

But reports suggest they may now face competition from Sydney FC for the veteran, after Marc Janko claimed the club have withdrawn an offer to extend his stay at the club. This has sparked increased speculation that they will approach the former-Italy international.
