The forced closure of Walleys Quarry has been hailed in Stoke-on-Trent where thousands of residents were plagued by 'the stink'. The landfill in Silverdale was issued a closure notice preventing it from accepting new waste from last Friday.

The action was taken as the site had been at the centre of a years-long legal row over emissions, smell, and its impact on local residents. And while those living in the village and surrounding Newcastle area, many residents of the border in neighbouring Stoke-on-Trent had to put up with the smell too.

They said fumes left a foul odour like "bad eggs" or "dirty nappies" making them ill and seriously affecting their quality of life. Now Stoke-on-Trent City Council has welcomed The Environment Agency’s decision to shut the quarry down.

Council leader Jane Ashworth said: “We welcome The Environment Agency’s decision to serve a closure notice on Walleys Quarry, which means it cannot accept new waste deliveries from Friday.

“We remain committed to supporting the local community and hope this action is the first step towards a permanent solution for residents who have been affected by this over many years.

“We are aware that complaints about foul gas odours have continued to increase over the course of the year and we join Newcastle-under-Lyme Borough Council in encouraging residents to carry on reporting the foul smells to them every time they happen.”

More than 1,000 complaints about smells wafting into people's homes were made almost every month in a row which has spanned over 10 years. Walleys Quarry is challenging the closure notice. Any appeal would be heard by a planning inspector.

A Walleys Quarry spokesman said: “We have received a closure notice from the Environment Agency. We are clear that keeping the site open delivers the greatest benefit and sustainability for the site. We will challenge this decision using all available options. Walleys Quarry has made extensive factual and legal submissions to the Environment Agency which in our view they have not substantively engaged with. As a business we completely reject the accusations made by the Environment Agency relating to poor management of the landfill site.”
