Council Tax Refund 2022: When do we get the £150 rebate?

Amid the cost of living crisis, chancellor Rishi Sunak announced in February that households across the UK would receive a council tax rebate.

Households living in council tax bands A-D could be eligible for the one-off £150 payment–which does not need to be paid back.

The government said the payments would be made from April–but when can we expect to receive the £150?

When do we get the £150 council tax rebate?

In England, if you pay your council tax by direct debit, your local council will pay you directly, beginning in April 2022.

However, if you don’t pay your council tax by direct debit, your local council will contact you from April to arrange a way to send you the money–so you may face a delay in receiving the rebate.

When you receive the £150 may also depend on the date you usually pay your council tax bill, as you may need to pay your April bill before being eligible.

And although the payments will start to go out in April, many people may not receive the £150 rebate for months.

Money Saving Expert reported that South Derbyshire District Council would not make the payments until June, while Portsmouth City Council said it would pay residents who don’t pay by direct debit in May or June.

Therefore, the date you’ll receive the £150 depends on both how you pay your council tax and where you live.

There is no need to claim the rebate from the council, as they will either pay you directly or arrange to make the payment.

So, although it is difficult to say exactly when you’ll receive the £150, the government has said that claims for the rebate can be processed until September 30, 2022, so that could be considered the final deadline.
