Two East Riding Councillors are to raise concerns over Cottingham flooding at a Council Meeting this week.

At Wednesday's Full Council Meeting, Labour Councillors Alex Duke (Cottingham North) and Carolyn Cantrell (Cottingham South) will raise their concerns regarding the lack of a flood prevention drainage board in place in the East Yorkshire village.

Cottingham North Labour Councillor, Alex Duke, is a founding member of Cottingham Flood Action Group and has been calling for action to prevent a repeat of the floods that hit Cottingham in the winter of 2023/24 which affected numerous households and businesses.

Cllr Duke said: "It is ridiculous that much of the East Riding has Internal Drainage Boards (IDBs) and yet our village which is at risk of flooding that could devastate many households and businesses does not have one.

"I want to see Cottingham either included in an IDB or better still have its own Drainage Board to monitor ditches, drains, gulleys and culverts to check for blockages. Businesses, peoples lives and household possessions are currently at risk."

Cllr Duke, alongside fellow Labour Councillor for Cottingham South, Cllr Carolyn Cantrell, is raising a motion in the upcoming Council Meeting which reads: "Council resolves to write to the Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs and relevant MPs calling for their support for an internal drainage board for areas of the East Riding not covered by them that are at risk of flooding." Cllr Carolyn Cantrell has said: "Last year we witnessed several areas and homes in Cottingham flood. Residents and businesses should not have to suffer the anxiety of wondering if their homes or shops are going to flood. We must do all we can to ensure all measures are put in place to prevent this from happening."
